THE NOAA PLATE RECORDS INDICATE THAT THE ORIGINAL PLATE FOR THIS CHART WAS # 154, WHICH WAS COMMENCED FEBRUARY, 1846. AN ALTO PLATE, # 163, WAS DONE ON AUGUST 9, 1850. THE RECORDS INDICATE THAT THE CHART "COMPRISES TITLE, SEAL, NOTES, SAILING DIRECTIONS, BUOYS, LIGHT HOUSES, SAILING LINES & NAMES OF CHESAPEAKE BAY AND KENT ISLAND." THE LONGITUDE NOTE ON THE BOTTOM BORDER WAS LATER ERASED FROM THE ALTO PLATE TO MAKE BASSO #4 IN 1878.
BASSO # 1 WAS DATED AUGUST 16, 1850 AND WAS PLATE # 155. THIS PLATE WAS CONDEMNED AND THE PLATE WAS LOST. BASSO # 2 FROM THE ALTO OF 1850 WAS DATED OCTOBER 19, 1857 AND WAS PLATE # 633, DONE APPARENTLY WITHOUT CHANGE BECAUSE THE AGENCY HAD RUN OUT OF COPIES. BASSO # 3 WAS DATED JUNE 16, 1863 AND WAS PLATE # 945. ON IT THE AIDS TO NAVIGATION WERE CORRECTED TO 1874, SO PRESUMABLY THERE WERE CORRECTIONS ON THE PLATE AND SEVERAL ISSUES. BASSO # 4 WAS DATED OCTOBER 18, 1878 AND WAS PLATE # 1452. A SECOND ALTO PLATE, # 635, WAS MADE ON SEPTEMBER 22, 1880 ON WHICH THE AIDS TO NAVIGATION WERE CORRECTED TO JULY, 1879.

THE ORIGINAL CHART OF 1846 WAS NUMBERED 385. THE NEW EDITION IN 1895 CARRIED THE SAME NUMBER. NOAA CHANGED ITS NUMBERING SYSTEM ON JULY 1, 1974 AND THE NEW NUMBER ASSIGNED EDITION 15 OF FEBRUARY 8, 1975 WAS 12283. THE NORTH AMERICAN DATUM OF 1983 WAS ADDED WITH EDITION 20 OF FEBRUARY 3, 1990.
LITHOGRAPHIC COPIES OF BASSO # 3 FROM PLATE # 945 WERE MADE FOR THE BICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION IN 1976. THAT PRINT IS IDENTIFIED BY A LARGE "BiC-29" IN THE LEFT BOTTOM MARGIN AND BY THE LEGEND IN FOUR LINES, "PUBLISHED AT WASHINGTON, D.C./ U.S. DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE/ NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION/ NATIONAL OCEAN SERVICE" UNDER THE SCALES IN THE CENTER BOTTOM MARGIN.
