DESCRIPTION : THIS SKETCH OF THE CHESAPEAKE AND DELAWARE BAYS WAS ISSUED TO ILLUSTRATE THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE U.S. COAST SURVEY SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY DURING THE YEAR 1845. IT GIVES MAJOR AND SECONDARY TRIANGULATION LINES FOR BOTH BODIES OF WATER AND FOR SOME OF THE RIVERS LEADING INTO THE CHESAPEAKE. IT SHOWS THE DATES THAT THE DIFFERENT TRIANGULATION STATIONS WERE ESTABLISHED. AS OF 1845, TRIANGULATION HAD ADVANCED FROM THE HEAD OF THE CHESAPEAKE AS FAR SOUTH AS SHARPS ISLAND, AND IN THE DELAWARE FROM NORTH OF WILMINGTON SOUTH TO CAPE HENLOPEN. TRIANGULATION OF THE RIVERS OF THE CHESAPEAKE WAS CONFINED TO THE CHESTER, SASSAFRAS & ELK ON THE EASTERN SHORE AND TO THE BACK RIVER AND THOSE NORTH ON THE WESTERN SHORE.

THE PRIMARY TRIANGULATION FOR CONNECTING THE WORK OF MR. HASSLER WITH THE BASE OF VERIFICATION ON KENT ISLAND WAS COMPLETED IN 1845 BY ASSISTANT JAMES FERGUSON. THE STATIONS OCCUPIED BY MR. FERGUSON ARE MARKED "F" AND THE YEAR OF THEIR OCCUPATION IS NOTED. THOSE OF MR. HASSLER ARE MARKED "H". MAGNETIC OBSERVATIONS REQUIRED FOR THE ANNAPOLIS HARBOR CHART WERE MADE AS WERE ONES ON KENT ISLAND AND AT 3 OTHER STATIONS BY LT. LEE. A RECONNAISSANCE WAS MADE FOR A TRIANGULATION TO CONNECT SURVEY STATIONS ON OR NEAR THE CHESAPEAKE WITH THE CAPITAL AND TO VERIFY THE TRIANGULATION OF THE POTOMAC RIVER. THE WORK WAS STARTED IN 1844. THE CONTINUATION OF THE PRIMARY TRIANGULATION OF THE CHESAPEAKE SOUTHWARD FROM KENT ISLAND WAS ASSIGNED TO EDMUND BLUNT. TWO PARTIES WERE ENGAGED IN SECONDARY AND TERTIARY TRIANGULATION IN THE ELK, BOHEMIA AND SASSAFRAS RIVERS, THE BAY FROM TURKEY POINT TO LEGOE'S POINT, THE GUNPOWDER, MIDDLE AND BACK RIVERS, THE CHESTER NEARLY TO THE HEAD OF NAVIGATION AND PART OF

THE BAY FROM KENT ISLAND SOUTHWARD. THE TOPOGRAPHY OF THE SHORES OF THE CHESAPEAKE AND ITS RIVERS FROM SWAN POINT TO THE HEAD OF THE BAY AND FROM THOMAS POINT TO THE HEAD OF THE BAY EXCEPT FOR SHEETS 6,7, AND 16 OF SKETCH B WAS DONE. THE HYDROGRAPHY IN THIS SECTION INCLUDED THE SOUNDINGS OF THE PATAPSCO RIVER AND THE HARBOR OF BALTIMORE, THE APPROACHES TO THE PATAPSCO AND PART OF THE BAY BETWEEN ANNAPOLIS HARBOR AND KENT ISLAND AND POOLE'S ISLAND.

PROGRESS SKETCHES OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY WERE DESIGNATED "SKETCH C" IN SUBSEQUENT ANNUALS.

EDITION & STATE INFO : INFORMAL REPORTS WERE MADE ANNUALLY BY THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY FROM 1816 THROUGH 1850. THESE WERE PUBLISHED BY THE TREASURY DEPARTMENT AND WERE SENT TO CONGRESS. BEGINNING WITH 1851, THESE PROGRESS REPORTS BECAME MORE FORMAL. THEY WERE PRODUCED IN MUCH LARGER QUANTITY AND WERE MORE WIDELY DISTRIBUTED TO SCHOOLS AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS AND INDIVIDUALS IN ADDITION TO CONGRESS. THE U.S. COAST SURVEY BECAME THE PUBLISHER BEGINNING IN 1851. THE WIDER DISSEMINATION WAS AN ATTEMPT BY THE AGENCY TO BUILD A WIDER BASE OF SUPPORT FOR THE ACTIVITIES OF THE COAST SURVEY. BEGINNING IN 1844, THESE REPORTS DESCRIBED IN CONSIDERABLE DETAIL THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY INCLUDING IN SECTION III, WHICH PRIMARILY CONSISTED OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND THE OCEAN FRONT OF DELAWARE, MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA. ANNUAL PROGRESS SKETCHES WERE APPENDED, SHOWING THE EXTENT OF THE TRIANGULATION, TOPOGRAPHY, HYDROGRAPHY AND OTHER WORK ACCOMPLISHED UP TO THAT TIME.

THE TWO COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION DIFFER IN THAT THE SECOND WAS INCORRECTLY ENTITLED "SKETCH C" AND THE "C" WAS LINED OUT IN MANUSCRIPT AND "B" WAS SUBSTITUTED IN MANUSCRIPT. IN ADDITION, THERE ARE A NUMBER OF DOTTED LINES IN THE PATAPSCO RIVER AREA THAT ARE MISSING IN THE ONE CORRECTLY MARKET "SKETCH B." IT WAS PROBABLY A LATER VERSION.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A GOOD COPY ON THIN PAPER WITH SOME BROWNING ALONG THE LEFT VERTICAL FOLD. THE COLLECTION HAS A SECOND COPY ON THIN PAPER WITH SOME BROWNING IN THE DELAWARE AREA. IT HAS "SKETCH C" IN THE TITLE, MARKED OUT IN MANUSCRIPT TO READ "SKETCH B". IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF B014-DHD AND A MdHR # OF MSA SC1399-647.

BIBLIGRAPHICAL REFS. : REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE U.S. COAST SURVEY SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE WORK DURING THE YEAR ENDING NOVEMBER, 1845, SENATE EX. DOC. 13, 29th CONGRESS, 1st SESSION, WASHINGTON: U.S. SENATE, 1845, 19-24, 35-36, 38.
