DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP IS A REVISED COPY OF THE DAVID H. BURR MAP OF 1833 (SEE MAP # 333B5) IN SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT DIMENSIONS AND WITH NUMEROUS ADDITIONS OF PLACE NAMES AND FEATURES. IT APPEARED AS MAP # 41 IN A 65 MAP FOLIO SIZE EDITION OF A NEW UNIVERSAL ATLAS; COMPRISING SEPARATE MAPS OF ALL THE PRINCIPAL EMPIRES, KINGDOMS & STATES THROUGHOUT THE WORLD: AND FORMING A DISTINCT ATLAS OF THE UNITED STATES. CAREFULLY COMPILED FROM THE BEST AUTHORITIES EXTANT IN 1842 BY JEREMIAH GREENLEAF IN BRATTLEBORO, VERMONT. IT WAS PRINTED BY G.R. FRENCH. THIS EDITION IS REFERENCED IN PHILLIPS ATLASES, # 784, MAP # 41. HOWEVER, BOTH TOOLEY'S DICTIONARY AND KARPINSKI REFER TO AN 1840 EDITION OF THIS ATLAS. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE 1840 PLATE DIFFERS FROM THAT OF THE 1842 EDITION, ALTHOUGH WRITER HAS NOT SEEN THE 1840 MAP.

THIS MAP SHOWS THE MAIN ROADS AND TOWNS OF DELAWARE AND MARYLAND. THE CHESAPEAKE AND ITS TRIBUTARIES AND THE DELAWARE BAY AND RIVER ARE SHOWN ENGRAVED IN PARALLEL HORIZONTAL LINES, WHICH DISAPPEAR IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN AREA. SOME 19 COUNTIES ARE SHOWN IN MARYLAND IN FULL COLOR. IN FACT, ALL REFERENCES TO THE ATLAS INDICATE THAT THE MAP WAS ONLY ISSUED IN COLOR. LONGITUDE IS SHOWN WEST FROM GREENWICH IN THE TOP BORDER AND FROM WASHINGTON, D.C. IN THE BOTTOM BORDER.

JEREMIAH GREENLEAF LIVED FROM 1791 TO 1864. DAVID BURR, FROM WHOM THIS MAP WAS TAKEN, LIVED FROM 1803 TO 1875. HE WAS TOPOGRAPHER TO THE POST OFFICE AND GEOGRAPHER TO THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE U.S. HIS ATLASES WERE PUBLISHED FROM 1830 TO 1850.

DATA IS FROM RISTOW, PHILLIPS ATLASES, KARPINSKI'S MAPS OF FAMOUS CARTOGRAPHERS DEPICTING NORTH AMERICA, TOOLEY'S DICTIONARY AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
