DESCRIPTION : THIS WALL-SIZE MAP COVERS FROM HARRISBURG, PA. IN THE NORTH TO THE RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER IN THE SOUTH AND FROM THE DELAWARE RIVER IN THE EAST TO PAST THE WESTERN BOUNDARY OF MARYLAND. IT DEPICTS CITIES, TOWNS, COUNTY LINES, ROADS, RAILROADS, CANALS, CHURCHES AND MOUNTAINS. SOUNDINGS ARE GIVEN IN BOTH FEET AND FATHOMS AND SHOALS ARE SHADED. THIS IS A VERY DETAILED DEPICTION OF THE STATE OF MARYLAND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE 19th CENTURY. ALTHOUGH IT OMITS THE LOCATIONS OF VARIOUS INDUSTRIAL SITES, IT IS CONSIDERABLY MORE DETAILED IN MOST AREAS THAN THE DENNIS GRIFFITH MAP OF 1794 AND ITS 1813 REISSUE. THE LUCAS MAP WAS PACKAGED IN A BOOK-SIZED SLIP CASE AND GAVE AN UP-TO-DATE PRESENTATION OF MARYLAND DURING AN ACTIVE PERIOD OF INTERNAL IMPROVEMENTS. MANY OF THE NAMES ARE UPDATED. FOR EXAMPLE, ELIZABETHTOWN IN THE DENNIS GRIFFITH MAP IS NOW HAGERSTOWN. ALSO, UNLIKE THE GRIFFITH MAP, LUCAS' MAP WAS A FINANCIAL SUCCESS. THE ENGRAVING WAS DONE BY JOHN WARR OF PHILADELPHIA. THIS MAP WAS REISSUED IN 1852, WITH POPULATION DATA UPDATED FROM THE 1840 CENSUS TO THE 1850 CENSUS IN THE INSET AND WITH THE PUBLISHER'S STATEMENT REDATED.

DATA IS FROM PAPENFUSE & COALE, FROM THE JAMES FOSTER ARTICLE, AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE REPRODUCTION OF THE MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : TWO STATES OF THIS MAP ARE KNOWN:

STATE 1 - (1841) - THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED.

STATE 2 - (1852) - THIS STATE IS IDENTICAL WITH THE 1841 STATE EXCEPT THAT IT CONTAINS 1850 CENSUS DATA IN THE INSETS RATHER THAN THOSE OF 1840 AND THE DATE IN THE PUBLISHER'S STATEMENT HAS BEEN CHANGED TO 1852. WE HAVE NOT YET SEEN A COPY OF THE 1852 ISSUE.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A REPRODUCTION OF THE 1841 STATE OF THIS MAP. IT HAS A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-317 (REPRO). THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS HAS DUPLICATE COPIES OF THE 1852 ISSUE.
