DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP IS THE FIRST OF TWO SHEETS ENTITLED "THE SOUTHERN STATES I" (MAPS 3 AND 4) OF BRADFORD'S ATLAS DESIGNED TO ILLUSTRATE THE MALTE-BRUN SCHOOL GEOGRAPHY, 15 MAPS, 4o, NEW YORK: F.J. HUNTINGTON & CO. c1838. IT COVERS MARYLAND, VIRGINIA AND NORTH CAROLINA, DIVIDING THOSE STATES INTO COUNTIES. RAILROADS AND CANALS ARE SHOWN, BUT NOT WAGON ROADS. NO HYDROGRAPHIC INFORMATION IS GIVEN, WITH WATER AREAS SHOWN BY PARALLEL, SHORE CONFORMING LINES. THE REPRESENTATION OF THE MARYLAND AREA IS TOO SMALL TO ADD ANYTHING GEOGRAPHICALLY TO THE EXISTING MAPS OF THE STATE. AN EARLIER 1830 VERSION OF THIS ATLAS BY S.G. GOODRICH PUBLISHED IN HARTFORD BY H. & F.J. HUNTINGTON DID NOT INCLUDE THIS MAP.

THE SCHOOL ATLASES OF THIS PERIOD PROBABLY HAD THE WIDEST CIRCULATION OF ANY PUBLISHED MAPS BECAUSE OF COMPULSORY EDUCATION. THE BOOKS WERE OFTEN DESTROYED BY THE STUDENTS IN USE. THE SCHOOL ATLAS OR GEOGRAPHY WAS THE ONE BOOK OF MAPS FOUND IN ALMOST EVERY HOME WITH A CHILD OF SCHOOL AGE AND THESE MAPS WERE PROBABLY THE MOST FREQUENTLY CONSULTED DURING THE WESTWARD MIGRATION.

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS ATLASES FROM KARPINSKI AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY OF THE MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : ONLY A SINGLE EDITION AND STATE IS KNOWN TO WRITER.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COLORED COPY OF THIS MAP. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF BB023-2N AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-167.
