DESCRIPTION : THUS FAR VERY LITTLE HAS BEEN FOUND ON THIS MAP. IT'S TITLE AND THE PROFILES APPEAR SELF EXPLANATORY. HOWEVER, IT IS NOT KNOWN TO THE WRITER WHICH COMMISSION AND/OR COMMISSIONERS HAD HIRED E.W. BRIDGES AND FIELDING LUCAS, JR. TO SURVEY AND DRAW THESE ROUTES OR THE PURPOSE OF THE CANAL. THE MAP COVERS FROM THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA IN THE SOUTH TO EMMETSBURG IN THE NORTH AND FROM THE CHESAPEAKE BAY TO HARPER'S FERRY. FROM THE TITLE OF THE ALTITUDE SCALE, IT APPEARS THAT THIS MAP ACCOMPANIED A DETAILED REPORT TO THE COMMISSION THAT AUTHORIZED THE SURVEY.
