DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP IS ONE OF THE BEST ENGRAVED MAPS OF THE MARYLAND/CHESAPEAKE AREA OF THE EARLY 1800S. IT SHOWS SOME RAILROAD LINES, BUT OMITS ROADS. IT CONTINUES THE USE OF AN INSET FOR WESTERN MARYLAND, SEEN FIRST IN THE 1790S, TO ENABLE A LARGER SCALE TO BE EMPLOYED. THE MAP FIRST APPEARED AS # 25 IN BRADFORD'S AN ILLUSTRATED ATLAS, GEOGRAPHICAL, STATISTICAL, AND HISTORICAL, OF THE UNITED STATES, AND THE ADJACENT COUNTRIES, 39 MAPS, FOLIO, PHILADELPHIA, E.S. GRANT & CO., 1838. ANOTHER IMPRINT OF THE SAME ATLAS IS BOSTON, WEEKS, JORDAN & CO. THE MAP WAS ACCOMPANIED BY ONE OF THE BEST SUMMARY ACCOUNTS OF MARYLAND (PP. 104-109). THE MAP LATER WAS PUBLISHED AS # 25 IN A UNIVERSAL, ILLUSTRATED ATLAS, EXHIBITING A GEOGRAPHICAL, STATISTICAL AND HISTORICAL VIEW OF THE WORLD, 49 MAPS, FOLIO, BOSTON, CHARLES D. STRONG. 1842 BY T.G. BRADFORD AND S.G. GOODRICH. THE MAP APPARENTLY WAS UNCHANGED AND IT CONTINUED TO CARRY THE 1838 DATE. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE MAP WAS ALSO IN A GENERAL ATLAS OF THE WORLD, EDITED BY S.G. GOODRICH, BOSTON: C.D. STRONG, 1841, WITH THE IMPRINT "ENTERED .... 1841 BY C.D. STRONG....". A DETACHED COPY WAS SEEN IN 1983 AT ARGOSY WITH THE PAGE NUMBER "27" IN THE TOP LEFT MARGIN AND THE SAME IMPRINT AND COPYRIGHT NOTICE AS THE EARLIER VERSION.

THE ILLUSTRATED ATLAS... WAS ONE OF THE EARLIEST ATLASES TO CONTAIN FOLIO SIZE MAPS OF BOTH MARYLAND AND BALTIMORE. THE MAPS ARE USUALLY FOUND TINTED IN SOFT PASTEL COLORS.

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS MAPS, PHILLIPS ATLASES, KARPINSKI AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : ONLY ONE EDITION OF THIS MAP IS THOUGHT TO EXIST IN TWO STATES, ALTHOUGH THE SECOND STATE IS CONJECTURAL UNTIL FURTHER RESEARCH HAS BEEN DONE. THE SECOND STATE IS BASED ON A NOTE ON PAGE 259 OF KARPINSKI THAT MAP # 22 ("MICHIGAN") ALSO APPEARED IN A GENERAL ATLAS OF THE WORLD.... EDITED BY S.G. GOODRICH, BOSTON, C.D. STRONG, WITH THE IMPRINT ON THE MAP CHANGED TO "ENTERED....1841 BY C.D. STRONG". IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE OTHER MAPS WERE SIMILARLY ALTERED.

STATE 1 - (1838) - THIS IS THE MAP AS DESCRIBED HEREIN.

STATE 2 - (1841) - THIS STATE, IF IT EXISTS, WOULD HAVE BEEN IN A GENERAL ATLAS OF THE WORLD.... EDITED BY S.G. GOODRICH, BOSTON, C.D. STRONG (A COPY OF WHICH IS IN THE BOSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY). IN 1983, WRITER SAW A COPY OF THE BRADFORD MAP DATED BY ARGOSY AS 1841 WITH A PAGE NUMBER "27" IN THE TOP LEFT. THE MAP WAS DATED 1838 IN THE BOTTOM MARGIN AND THE SAME ENGRAVER'S STATEMENT WAS SHOWN.

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS AND KARPINSKI.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A BEAUTIFUL COLORED COPY WITH WIDE MARGINS OF STATE 1, WITH AN ACQ. # OF BB023-DUF AND A MDHR # OF G1399-176.
