DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP SHOWS THE MAIN ROADS AND TOWNS OF DELAWARE AND MARYLAND. THE CHESAPEAKE AND ITS TRIBUTARIES AND THE DELAWARE BAY AND RIVER ARE ENGRAVED IN PARALLEL HORIZONTAL LINES, WHICH DISAPPEAR IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN AREA. SOME 19 COUNTIES ARE SHOWN IN MARYLAND IN FULL COLOR. LONGITUDE IS WEST FROM GREENWICH IN THE TOP BORDER AND FROM WASHINGTON,D.C. IN THE BOTTOM BORDER.

THIS IS THE SECOND STATE OF THE FIRST EDITION OF THIS MAP, WITH ONLY THE IMPRINT IN THE BOTTOM MARGIN CHANGED AS TO DATE. IT IS NOT YET KNOWN TO WRITER WHERE THIS STATE OF THE MAP WAS PUBLISHED, BUT IS THOUGHT TO HAVE BEEN IN AN 1836 EDITION OF A NEW UNIVERSAL ATLAS SINCE IT HAS AN ENGRAVED MAP # 41 IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT MARGIN. THIS MAP FIRST APPEARED AS MAP # 41 IN THE BURR ATLAS A NEW UNIVERSAL ATLAS; COMPRISING SEPARATE MAPS OF ALL THE PRINCIPAL KINGDOMS & STATES THROUGHOUT THE WORLD: AND FORMING A DISTINCT ATLAS OF THE UNITED STATES. CAREFULLY COMPILED FROM THE BEST AUTHORITIES EXTANT BY DAVID H. BURR, 63 MAPS, FOLIO, NEW YORK: D.S. STONE, 1835(?). SEE MAP # 333B5. BURR BEGAN TO COMPILE MAPS IN 1830 FOR A WORLD ATLAS AND BY 1832 HAD COMPLETED AND COPYRIGHTED 8 MAPS, WHICH WERE ENGRAVED BY THE NEW YORK FIRM OF THOMAS ILLMAN AND EDWARD PILLBROW. IN THAT YEAR BURR ACCEPTED THE POSITION OF TOPOGRAPHER TO THE U.S. POST OFFICE DEPARTMENT AND WAS UNABLE TO COMPLETE THE ATLAS. ILLMAN AND PILLBROW ASSUMED THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR ITS COMPLETION AND THE FIRST ISSUE OF A NEW UNIVERSAL ATLAS WAS PUBLISHED IN 1835 BY D.S. STONE OF NEW YORK CITY.

THIS MAP, IN SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT DIMENSIONS, LATER APPEARED AS MAP # 41 IN ANOTHER EDITION OF THIS ATLAS BY JEREMIAH GREENLEAF CONTAINING 65 MAPS, FOLIO, PUBLISHED IN BRATTLEBORO, VERMONT. IT WAS PRINTED BY G.R. FRENCH IN 1842. REFERENCES HAVE BEEN FOUND FOR AN 1840 EDITION OF THIS ATLAS, BUT WRITER HAS NOT SEEN IT. THIS EDITION OF THE MAP HAS NUMEROUS ADDITIONS INCLUDING TOWN NAMES, FACTORIES, FERRIES, ETC. SEE MAP # 342G5.

DAVID BURR LIVED FROM 1803 TO 1875. HE WAS BORN IN BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT AND MOVED TO KINGSBORO, N.Y. IN 1822, WHERE HE STUDIED LAW. HE ENLISTED IN THE NEW YORK MILITIA IN 1824 AND BECAME AN AIDE-DE-CAMP TO GOVERNOR CLINTON. HE WAS APPOINTED HEAD OF ONE OF THE THREE SURVEYING PARTIES AUTHORIZED BY THE LEGISLATURE IN 1825 TO SURVEY THE STATE. BURR OBTAINED ALL THESE SURVEYS AND PUT OUT AN ATLAS OF NEW YORK IN 1830 (ALTHOUGH IT WAS DATED 1829) ENTITLED ATLAS OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY A LARGE MAP OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK AND THE SURROUNDING COUNTRY. IT WAS AT THAT POINT IN HIS CAREER THAT HE BEGAN WORK AND PLANNING ON HIS A NEW UNIVERSAL ATLAS. HIS ATLASES WERE PUBLISHED FROM 1830-1850. JEREMIAH GREENLEAF, WHO LATER OBTAINED THE RIGHTS TO A NEW UNIVERSAL ATLAS, LIVED FROM 1791 TO 1864.

DATA IS FROM RISTOW, PHILLIPS ATLASES, TOOLEY'S DICTIONARY, KARPINSKI, AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES OF THE MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THIS MAP IS KNOWN IN TWO EDITIONS. 1ST ED. - 1ST STATE - (1833) - 1ST ED. - 1ST STATE - (1833) - THIS IS SIMILAR TO THE MAP DESCRIBED EXCEPT THAT THE DATE IN THE IMPRINT IS "1833" IN THE BOTTOM MARGIN AND THERE IS NO MAP NUMBER IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT MARGIN. SEE MAP # 333B5.

- 2ND STATE - (1836) - THIS IS SIMILAR TO THE MAP DESCRIBED EXCEPT THAT THE DATE IN THE IMPRINT HAS BEEN CHANGED TO 1836 AND THE MAP NUMBER 41 IS ADDED IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT MARGIN. THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.

2ND ED. - (1842) - THIS MAP IS CONTAINED IN JEREMIAH GREENLEAF'S EDITION OF A NEW UNIVERSAL ATLAS, BRATTLEBORO, VERMONT: 1840 AND 1842, (PRINTED BY G.R. FRENCH). WRITER HAS NOT EXAMINED THE 1840 ISSUE, WHICH MAY BE DIFFERENT. HOWEVER, THE 1842 EDITION IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION SHOWS ALL WRITING OUTSIDE AND BELOW THE NEAT LINE IN THE BURR EDITION ELIMINATED, EXCEPT FOR PAGE "41" IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT MARGIN. "BY DAVID H. BURR NEW-YORK." HAS BEEN ELIMINATED IN THE TITLE. THE COLORING OF THE COUNTIES IS IDENTICAL TO THAT OF THE BURR MAP EXCEPT THAT IN THE INSET THE BURR MAP SHOWS THE SMALL PORTION OF WASHINGTON COUNTY IN YELLOW, WHEREAS GREENLEAF USES BLUE THROUGHOUT THE INSET. SOME 13 NEW NAMES WERE ADDED IN DELAWARE, 23 IN MARYLAND AND 1 IN VIRGINIA IN THE 1842 MAP. THE EXISTENCE OF AN 1840 EDITION OF THE ATLAS, NOT IN PHILLIPS, WAS OBTAINED FROM KARPINSKI, P.265 ITEM 152 (SEE NOTE). WRITER HAS NOT YET SEEN THE 1840 MAP, WHICH MAY CONTAIN VARIATIONS IN THE PLATE FROM THE 1842 EDITION.

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS ATLASES, KARPINSKI AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE VARIOUS STATES OF THE MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

THE COLLECTION HAS A FULL COLOR COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, SECOND STATE, DESCRIBED HEREIN, WITH AN ACQ. # OF N017-HUG AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-434. IN ADDITION, IT HAS A FULL COLOR COPY OF THE SECOND EDITION, WHICH IS ALSO WITHOUT A WATERMARK. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF G018-DGD AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-8.
