DESCRIPTION : THIS BRITISH ADMIRALTY CHART
SHOWS DETAILED SOUNDINGS AND SHOALS FROM LONG ISLAND TO NORTH
CAROLINA, INCLUDING THE ENTIRE CHESAPEAKE BAY. THERE IS NO ONSHORE
DETAIL. EDMUND BLUNT IS CREDITED AS THE PRINCIPAL SOURCE OF THE
CHART, BUT IT IS PROBABLY TAKEN FROM THE ANTHONY DEMAYNE CHART
PUBLISHED IN 1820 (SEE CHART # 320D5) WHICH ALSO CREDITED BLUNT.
J. & C. WALKER ENGRAVED THE PLATE AND R.B. BATE WAS THE SELLING
AGENT FOR THE BRITISH ADMIRALTY CHARTS. THE CHART WAS OF
IMPORTANCE BECAUSE THE U.S. COAST SURVEY DID NOT BEGIN ITS WORK ON
THE CHESAPEAKE UNTIL 1843 AND THIS WAS ONE OF THE MORE DETAILED
CHARTS AVAILABLE AT THE TIME.
DATA IS BASED ON OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD
COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : NO DATA HAS YET BEEN FOUND ON
THIS CHART, BUT IT WAS PROBABLY BASED ON THE 1820 ANTHONY DEMAYNE
CHART ALSO PUBLISHED BY THE BRITISH ADMIRALTY.
HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS
AN EXCELLENT COPY ON HEAVY PAPER WITH FULL MARGINS. IT HAS AN ACQ.
# OF B016-DEH AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-528.
