DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP SHOWS THE DISPOSITION OF THE BATTLE FORCES AT YORKTOWN JUST PRIOR TO THE BATTLE IN 1781. IT IS PLATE 9 OF THE SECOND ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDITION ATLAS TO ACCOMPANY MARSHALL'S LIFE OF GEORGE WASHINGTON, PHILADELPHIA: J. CRISSY, 1834. IT WAS ENGRAVED BY J. YEAGER. OTHER EDITIONS OF THIS MAP ARE NOTED BY VERNER INCLUDING THE FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, A FRENCH, A DUTCH AND A GERMAN..

DATA IS FROM VERNER, WINDSOR, SABIN AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES OF THE MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THERE IS SOME CONFUSION ON THE SEQUENCE AND NUMBER OF EDITIONS AND STATES OF THIS MAP. VERNER IDENTIFIES THREE EDITIONS, TWO IN ENGLISH AND ONE IN FRENCH. SABIN NOTES AN 1838 PHILADELPHIA EDITION OF MARSHALL'S BOOK "WRITTEN FOR THE USE OF SCHOOLS", A HAMBURG EDITION, AND A DUTCH EDITION (1805-9). AT LEAST THE DUTCH EDITION HAD THE ATLAS, SO THERE MAY HAVE BEEN ONE OR MORE OTHER ISSUES AND/OR EDITIONS OF THE MAP.

ONE EDITION - (1807) - THIS IS INDICATED BY VERNER AS PLATE NO. IX OF MARSHALL'S LIFE OF GEORGE WASHINGTON, PHILADELPHIA: C.P. WAYNE, 1807, ENGRAVED BY FRANCIS SHALLUS. VERNER GIVES A MEASUREMENT OF 27.3 X 22.5 CM, BUT DOES NOT INDICATE WHETHER THIS IS THE MAP OR THE PLATE. THE COPY OF THE MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION IS 23.2 X 21.2 CM. IT DOES NOT EXTEND AS FAR WEST AS THE OTHER EDITIONS, BUT GOES FURTHER NORTH. THE WINDSOR ILLUSTRATION, CITED BY VERNER, DOES NOT SHOW ANY TITLE OR THE SCALE. THE COLLECTION'S COPY IS ENTITLED PLAN OF THE INVESTMENT AND ATTACK OF YORK IN VIRGINIA (IN THE BOTTOM LEFT CORNER) AND HAS THE SCALE. SEE MAP # 307S5.

ANOTHER EDITION - (1807) - THIS IS THE MAP IN THE FRENCH VERSION OF THE ATLAS TO MARSHALL'S VIE DE GEORGE WASHINGTON, PARIS: DENTER, 1807. IT HAS THE NUMBERS "XIV" IN THE RIGHT TOP MARGIN AND THE MAP IS IN FRENCH. IT INCLUDES THE WORDS "CHEMIN DE WILLIAMSBOURG" OVER THE POSITION SHOWN FOR M. DE St. SIMON ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE MAP. THE TITLE IS IN FRENCH AND THE SCALE IN FRENCH IS ALSO PRESENT. IT MEASURES, ACCORDING TO VERNER, 25.4 X 35 CM., BUT HE DOESN'T INDICATE WHETHER THIS IS THE MAP OR PLATE.

THE COLLECTION'S COPY OF THE MAP IS 20.6 X 21.8 CM. SEE MAP # 307A5.

ANOTHER EDITION - (1834?) - THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN. IT IS PROPORTIONED MORE LIKE THE FRENCH THAN THE PRIOR AMERICAN EDITION. IT HAS "9" RATHER THAN "IX" AS THE MAP NUMBER AND HAS THE LEGEND "ENGRAVED BY J. YEAGER" IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT MARGIN. VERNER NOTES THAT THE COPY HE DESCRIBED WAS PLATE 8. THUS, THERE WERE PROBABLY TWO ISSUES AND/OR STATES OF THIS EDITION.

DATA IS FROM VERNER, WINDSOR, SABIN, AND FROM EXAMINATION OF THE THREE STATES OF THE MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY OF THIS CRISSY EDITION IN A COPY OF THE ATLAS TO MARSHALL'S LIFE OF GEORGE WASHINGTON, PHILADELPHIA: 1834. THE ATLAS IS IN POOR CONDITION, WITH THE BINDING LOOSE AND CONSIDERABLE BROWNING, NOT AFFECTING THIS PLATE. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF DRB025-3Q* AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-473. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS A COLORED COPY OF THE 1807 AMERICAN EDITION IN OUTLINE COLORING ON HEAVY PAPER WITH WIDE MARGINS. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF MH016-DLI AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-481. FINALLY, THE COLLECTION HAS A COPY OF THE FRENCH EDITION IN COLOR AND IN GOOD CONDITION ON HEAVY PAPER EXCEPT THAT THE TOP MARGIN HAS BEEN EXTENDED. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF O021-DFG AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-12.
