THE MAP IS A REPUBLICATION OF ONE ORIGINALLY DRAWN BY D.H. VANCE, ENGRAVED BY J.H. YOUNG AND PUBLISHED BY ANTHONY FINLEY IN 1824. THE ORIGINAL MAP IS BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN ISSUED INITIALLY AS A SEPARATE. IT WAS REPRINTED WITH THE DATE 1825 IN THE TITLE. THE FIRST USE OF THE MAP IN AN ATLAS WAS IN ANTHONY FINLEY'S A NEW AMERICAN ATLAS, PHILADELPHIA: 1826, AS MAP #7. THE 1824 STATE WAS USED. MITCHELL USED THE SAME PLATES IN HIS RERELEASE, WHICH ORIGINALLY OCCURRED IN 1831 IN AN ATLAS BEARING THE SAME NAME. SOME TOWNS AND ROADS WERE ADDED BY MITCHELL AND THE FINLEY IMPRINT WAS REPLACED BY "PUBLISHED BY S. AUGUSTUS MITCHELL, PHILADELPHIA, 1831." IN THE 1832 STATE, THE DATE IS AGAIN CHANGED. VANCE'S NAME IS DELETED FROM THE LEFT BOTTOM MARGIN AND THE YOUNG LEGEND IS MOVED TO INSIDE THE NEAT LINE AND CHANGED TO "J.H. YOUNG, SC.". A DECORATIVE BORDER IS ADDED. RISTOW NOTES THAT MITCHELL'S REPRINT OF FINLEY'S A NEW AMERICAN ATLAS WAS MITCHELL'S FIRST CARTOGRAPHIC PUBLICATION.
SAMUEL AUGUSTUS MITCHELL WAS BORN IN BRISTOL, CONNECTICUT ON MARCH 20, 1792. HIS FAMILY HAD IMMIGRATED FROM SCOTLAND IN 1773. HE ORIGINALLY TAUGHT, BUT ACCORDING TO RISTOW FOUND THE AVAILABLE GEOGRAPHY TEXTBOOKS INADEQUATE AND SET ABOUT ON THE TASK OF IMPROVING THEM. MITCHELL MOVED TO PHILADELPHIA IN 1829 OR 1830.
DATA IS FROM RISTOW, AND OBSERVATION OF THE PHOTOCOPY OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : THIS HAS NOT BEEN THOROUGHLY RESEARCHED. HOWEVER, THE MAP DATED 1824, THE PLATES OF WHICH WERE USED FOR THE MAP DESCRIBED, MAY ORIGINALLY HAVE BEEN ISSUED AS A SEPARATE. IT FIRST APPEARED IN AN ATLAS IN ANTHONY FINLEY'S A NEW AMERICAN ATLAS IN 1826 AS MAP # 7. THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS AN 1827 DATED STATE, WHICH MAY HAVE APPEARED IN A SUBSEQUENT ISSUE OF THE ATLAS, ALTHOUGH RISTOW STATES THAT IT APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN A ONE-TIME EFFORT.
