DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP WAS PUBLISHED IN
GOODRICH'S ATLAS DESIGNED TO ILLUSTRATE THE MALTE-BRUN SCHOOL
GEOGRAPHY, 11 MAPS, 4o, HARTFORD: H. & F.J. HUNTINGTON, 1830,
AS MAP # 2. POSSIBLY A SECOND STATE OF THIS MAP APPEARED IN THE
ATLAS OF THE SAME NAME, C. 1838, PUBLISHED NEW YORK, F.J.
HUNTINGTON WITH THE NAME CHANGED TO "THE MIDDLE STATES". WRITER
HAS NOT SEEN THIS STATE, WHICH IS REFERRED TO IN PHILLIPS
ATLASES # 286. KARPINSKI IN A NOTE NEXT TO MAP # 396, GIVES
SOME ADDITIONAL REFERENCES OF ATLAS EDITIONS THAT MIGHT ALSO
CONTAIN THE MAP. THIS MAP IS USUALLY FOUND IN FULL COLOR, WITH THE
COLOR FADED. IT COVERS THE AREA FROM CANADA TO SOUTH OF CAPE
HATTERAS AND FROM WESTERN CONNECTICUT TO EASTERN OHIO. COUNTY
BOUNDARIES ARE SHOWN, BUT THE 2.8 MILLION TO 1 SCALE PREVENTS
DETAIL. THE MAP IS OF LITTLE SIGNIFICANCE TO A MD/CHESAPEAKE
COLLECTION EXCEPT FOR ITS INCLUSION IN A SCHOOL ATLAS. THE SCHOOL
ATLASES OF THIS PERIOD PROBABLY HAD THE WIDEST CIRCULATION OF ANY
PUBLISHED MAPS BECAUSE OF COMPULSORY EDUCATION. THE BOOKS WERE
OFTEN DESTROYED BY THE STUDENTS IN USE. THE SCHOOL ATLAS OR
GEOGRAPHY WAS THE ONE BOOK OF MAPS FOUND IN ALMOST EVERY HOME WITH
A CHILD OF SCHOOL AGE AND THESE MAPS WERE PROBABLY THE MOST
FREQUENTLY CONSULTED DURING THE WESTWARD MIGRATION.
S.G. GOODRICH ATTAINED FAME AS THE AUTHOR OF A LONG SERIES OF
"PETER PARLEY" BOOKS.
DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS ATLASES AND FROM KARPINSKI.
EDITION & STATE INFO : ONLY A SINGLE EDITION AND STATE
IS KNOWN TO WRITER. FURTHER RESEARCH IS NEEDED TO DETERMINE
WHETHER THE MAP "MIDDLE STATES" IN THE 1838 EDITION OF THE ATLAS IS
THE SAME MAP OTHER THAN THE TITLE AS THAT IN THE 1830 EDITION.
ALSO, THE KARPINSKI REFERENCES TO 1832, 1833, 1835 AND 1836
EDITIONS NEED TO BE CHECKED FOR MAP COMPARISONS.
HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS
A FULL COLOR COPY OF THIS MAP. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF BB023-2F AND A
MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-172.
