THE MAP FIRST APPEARED AS MAP # 17 OF ANTHONY FINLEY'S A NEW GENERAL ATLAS, COMPRISING A COMPLETE SET OF MAPS, REPRESENTING THE GRAND DIVISIONS OF THE GLOBE, TOGETHER WITH THE SEVERAL EMPIRES, KINGDOMS AND STATES IN THE WORLD; COMPILED FROM THE BEST AUTHORITIES AND CORRECTED BY THE MOST RECENT DISCOVERIES, IN 1824, PUBLISHED IN PHILADELPHIA. OTHER EDITIONS OF THE SAME ATLAS WERE PUBLISHED THROUGH 1834 AND ALL CONTAINED THE MAP OF MARYLAND, WHICH APPEARED AS MAP # 17 IN ALL EDITIONS. THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN IS FROM THE 1829 EDITION. THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS HAS THE EDITIONS OF 1824, 1826, 1829, 1830, 1831 AND 1833.
ANTHONY FINLEY WAS BORN AROUND 1790 AND LIVED UNTIL 1840. HE WAS BOTH A CARTOGRAPHER AND PUBLISHER IN PHILADELPHIA. HIS NEW GENERAL ATLAS WAS HIS LONGEST RUNNING PUBLICATION, BUT HE ALSO PUBLISHED A NEW AMERICAN ATLAS IN 1826 AND AN ATLAS CLASSICA; OR SELECT MAPS OF ANCIENT GEOGRAPHY, BOTH SACRED AND PROFANE IN 1829. THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS NEW GENERAL ATLAS OF 1829 IS BOUND TOGETHER WITH THE ATLAS CLASSICA FOR THAT YEAR. RISTOW SAYS THAT ATLAS CLASSICA WAS NOT INCLUDED WITH THE LATER VERSIONS OF THE NEW GENERAL ATLAS. YOUNG & DELLEKER, WHO ENGRAVED SOME OF THE MAPS FOR THE NEW GENERAL ATLAS ALSO DID ENGRAVING FOR FIELDING LUCAS JR. RISTOW SAYS THAT FINLEY BORROWED FREELY FROM EUROPEAN SOURCES. HE QUOTES FROM A REVIEW OF THE ATLAS IN THE NORTH AMERICAN REVIEW OF JULY, 1824 AS FOLLOWS: "THE ENGRAVING IS DONE ALMOST UNIFORMLY WITH REMARKABLE DISTINCTNESS AND THE FACE OF THE MAPS IS FREQUENTLY BEAUTIFUL, NOT OVERLOADED WITH A CONFUSION OF USELESS NAMES."
DATA IS FROM PERSONAL OBSERVATION OF THE 1824 AND 1829 ISSUES, FROM PHILLIPS ATLASES AND FROM RISTOW'S AMERICAN MAPS AND MAPMAKERS. PAPENFUSE AND COALE HAVE AN EXCELLENT, LARGE REPRODUCTION IN THEIR ATLAS OF HISTORICAL MAPS...
EDITION & STATE INFO : THE EDITION AND STATE INFORMATION HAS NOT YET BEEN RESEARCHED THOROUGHLY. HOWEVER, THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS HAS, ACCORDING TO PHILLIPS, SIX EDITIONS OF ANTHONY FINLEY'S ANEW GENERAL ATLAS..., IN WHICH THIS MAP APPEARS, EACH TIME AS MAP # 17. THE ATLASES WERE DATED 1824, 1826, 1829, 1830, 1831, AND 1833. RISTOW CITES 1834 AS THE FINAL EDITION. THERE WERE 58 COLORED MAPS IN THE EDITIONS UP THROUGH 1830. THE LATER EDITIONS HAVE 60. NO COMPARISON HAS YET BEEN MADE OF THE MAPS IN THESE VARIOUS ATLASES EXCEPT FOR THE 1824 AND 1829 VERSIONS. THE 1824 ISSUE'S TITLE IS NOT ENCLOSED IN A CARTOUCHE, WHEREAS THAT OF THE 1829 IS. THE EARLIER VERSION HAS NO DETAILS IN VIRGINIA AND FEW IN PENNSYLVANIA. THE LATER VERSION HAD ADDED EXTENSIVE INFORMATION IN BOTH AREAS. RAILROADS AND PROPOSED RAILROADS WERE ADDED TO THE 1829 ISSUE. DESPITE THE MANY CHANGES, THE MAPS APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN FROM THE SAME PLATE, ALTHOUGH THIS NEEDS TO BE CONFIRMED BY FURTHER OBSERVATION. WRITER HAS ALSO SEEN THE 1829 STATE ISSUED AS A SEPARATE FOLDED INTO A SMALL BROWN MAP COVER WITH THE TITLE "MARYLAND" IN GOLD LEAF. THE COVER IS 8.8 X 5.3 CM. IT HAS THE NUMBER 17 ON THE MAP, AS IN THE ATLAS MAP. THE SEPARATE OBSERVED WAS IN THE COLLECTION OF DR. LAURENCE CLAGGETT OF EASTON, MD.
HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : HFC HAS A GOOD COLORED COPY OF THIS 1829 ISSUE OF THE MAP. HFC ALSO HAS A GOOD COLORED COPY OF THE 1824 ISSUE, FRAMED, WITH AN HFC ACQ. # OF BB023-DUD AND A MDHR # OF G1399-220 AS WELL AS A FULL SIZE BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOCOPY OF THE 1824 ISSUE FROM THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS WITH A MDHR # OF G1399- 421.
