DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP SHOWS THE STATES OF VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND DIVIDED INTO COUNTIES, EACH SEPARATELY COLORED. IT INDICATES THE COUNTY SEATS AND GIVES THE MAIN ROADS. RAILROADS ARE NOT DRAWN IN, NOR IS THERE ANY HYDROGRAPHIC INFORMATION. THE PORTIONS OF THE SURROUNDING STATES THAT ARE INCLUDED ON THE MAP ARE IN BLACK AND WHITE, AS IS THE INSET "PLAN OF WASHINGTON CITY & GEORGETOWN." IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE MAP, FIRST DATED 1824 WAS ISSUED AS A SEPARATE. THE MAP WAS REPRINTED WITH THE DATE IN THE TITLE CHANGED TO 1825. THE FIRST USE IN AN ATLAS WAS IN ANTHONY FINLEY'S A NEW AMERICAN ATLAS, FOL., PHILADELPHIA, 1826, WHERE IT APPEARED AS MAP #7. THE 1827 ISSUE WAS PROBABLY IN A LATER ISSUE OF THE ATLAS BECAUSE IT STILL BEARS THE NUMBER "7" IN THE RIGHT TOP MARGIN, ALTHOUGH RISTOW STATES THAT THE ATLAS "APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN A ONE-TIME EFFORT." THE SAME PLATES WERE USED BY S. AUGUSTUS MITCHELL FOR AN ATLAS PUBLISHED UNDER THE SAME NAME IN 1831. A NUMBER OF PLATE CHANGES, BOTH GEOGRAPHIC AND IN THE TITLE AND MARGINAL MATERIAL WERE MADE. THE L.C. HAS A COPY OF AN ISSUE WITH AN 1832 DATE PUBLISHED ALSO BY MITCHELL. J.H. HINTON'S THE HISTORY AND TOPOGRAPHY OF THE UNITED STATES OF NORTH AMERICA, LONDON: JENNINGS & CHAPLIN & J.T. HINTON, 1830-32 CONTAINED A 24.8 X 39.7 CM. REDUCED SIZE VERSION OF THE VANCE MAP ENTITLED "MAP OF THE STATES OF VIRGINIA, AND MARYLAND". SABIN INDICATES THAT THIS ONCE POPULAR HISTORY WAS ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED IN MONTHLY PARTS. IT HAS FINE STEEL ENGRAVINGS AND SOME COPIES WERE ISSUED WITH THE PLATES ON INDIA PAPER. TWO OTHER EDITIONS ALSO CONTAIN THE MAP. ONE IN 1834, BY THE SAME PUBLISHERS AND A THIRD EDITION ISSUED ALSO IN LONDON BY J. DOWDING IN 1842. THE L.C. HAS A COPY OF THE THIRD EDITION WITH THE MAP. THE SAME PUBLICATION WAS ALSO REPRINTED IN SEVERAL EDITIONS IN BOSTON FROM 1834 THROUGH 1855. SABIN NOTES THAT THE ADDITIONS ARE CONFINED TO THE LETTER-PRESS AND THE PLATES ARE LESS NUMEROUS AND MUCH INFERIOR TO THOSE IN THE ENGLISH EDITION. WRITER HAS NOT SEEN THE BOSTON REPRINTS AND DOES NOT KNOW IF THE MAP IS ALSO INCLUDED IN THOSE VERSIONS.

DATA IS FROM PHILIPS, RISTOW, SABIN AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES OF THE MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THIS HAS NOT BEEN THOROUGHLY RESEARCHED., HOWEVER, THE MAP DATED 1824, WHICH MAY ORIGINALLY HAVE BEEN ISSUED AS A SEPARATE, FIRST APPEARED IN AN ATLAS IN ANTHONY FINLEY'S A NEW AMERICAN ATLAS IN 1826 AS MAP # 7. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT A SUBSEQUENT ISSUE OF THE ATLAS WITH THE MAP UPDATED AS TO DATE WAS PUBLISHED, ALTHOUGH RISTOW STATES THAT IT "APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN A ONE-TIME EFFORT." THE SAME PLATES WERE USED BY S.A. MITCHELL FOR AN ATLAS PUBLISHED UNDER THE SAME NAME IN 1831, WITH SOME PLATE CHANGES.

1ST STATE - (1824) - SIMILIAR TO THE 1827 STATE EXCEPT THAT THE DATE IN THE TITLE IS 1824.THIS VERSION APPEARED IN FINLEY'S A NEW AMERICAN ATLAS, PHILADELPHIA, 1826, AS MAP # 7. SEE MAP # 324V5.

ANOTHER STATE - (1825) - THIS IS SIMILAR TO THE 1824 STATE EXCEPT THAT THE DATE IN THE TITLE IS 1825. THE IMPRINT DATE REMAINS 1824. A COPY OF THIS STATE WAS SEEN BRIEFLY IN THE OLD PRINT SHOP IN NYC. SEE MAP # 325V5.

ANOTHER STATE - (1827) - THIS IS SIMILAR TO THE 1825 STATE EXCEPT THAT THE DATE IN THE TITLE IS CHANGED TO 1827 AND THE IMPRINT DATE HAS BEEN DELETED. THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.

ANOTHER STATE - (1831) - THE FINLEY IMPRINT IS DELETED AND IN ITS PLACE WAS ADDED "PUBLISHED BY S. AUGUSTUS MITCHELL, PHILADELPHIA, 1831." VANCE'S NAME IS DELETED. THE J.H. YOUNG LEGEND IS MOVED TO INSIDE THE NEAT LINE AND CHANGED TO "J.H. YOUNG, SC." A NEW DECORATIVE BORDER IS ADDED. SOME TOWNS AND ROADS WERE ADDED BY MITCHELL. SEE MAP # 331V5.

ANOTHER STATE - (1832) - THE L.C. HAS A SECOND MITCHELL VERSION OF THIS MAP DATED 1832 WITH THE TITLE "MAP OF VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND CONSTRUCTED FROM THE LATEST AUTHORITIES. PUBLISHED BY S. AUGUSTUS MITCHELL PHILADELPHIA 1832". THE POPULATION TABLE HAS BEEN RETAINED. THE OTHER CHANGES NOTED IN THE 1831 STATE WERE ALSO MADE. SEE MAP # 332V5.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS TWO GOOD COLORED COPIES OF THE 1827 STATE, WITH SOME BROWNING AND PRINT THROUGH, WITH ACQUISITION NUMBERS OF SW015-TFI AND MDHR #s OF G1399-598 AND G1399-619, RESPECTIVELY. HFC HAS A GOOD COPY OF THE REENGRAVED EDITION PUBLISHED BY J.H. HINTON IN 1831 WITH AN HFC ACQ. # OF BB023-DNF AND A MDHR # OF G1399-170.
