DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP WAS PLATE VIII OF A GEOGRAPHY FOR SCHOOLS, UPON A PLAN ENTIRELY NEW, CONSISTING OF AN ANALYTICAL ARRANGEMENT OF ALL THE GREAT FEATURES OF NATURE, PARTICULARLY ADAPTED TO AN ATLAS OF FORTY LUMINOUS AND CONCISE MAPS... ALSO GIVES TABULAR AND COMPREHENSIVE VIEWS OF STATISTICAL GEOGRAPHY.... ALSO OF ANCIENT GEOGRAPHY, UPON THE SAME PLAN...., 42PP, 40 MAPS, 4o. PROVIDENCE, R.I: MILLER & HUTCHENS, 1822.

THE MAP HAS NO BORDER, SO THE MEASUREMENTS OF 17.0 X 23.8 CM INCLUDE THE AREA IN WHICH THERE IS PRINTING. THE MAP IS SOMEWHAT UNUSUAL IN THAT THERE ARE MANY SIZES AND STYLES OF PRINTING OF NAMES. NO SOUNDINGS ARE GIVEN. THE ONLY SYMBOLS USED ARE THE MOUNTAINS ENTITLED "SOUTH MT." WEST OF FREDERICKTOWN IN WESTERN MARYLAND. PORTIONS OF THE SHORELINE ON THE LOWER PART OF THE MARYLAND EASTERN SHORE ARE SHOWN DOUBLE LINED AND CONSIDERABLY HEAVIER THAN THE REST OF THE MAP, SUGGESTING THAT THIS FIRST STATE WAS A PRELIMINARY ONE BEFORE THE ENGRAVING WAS COMPLETELY FINISHED.

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS ATLASES AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : OBSERVATION OF THE TWO COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION INDICATE THAT BOTH ARE FROM THE SAME PLATE, BUT WITH ADDITIONAL ENGRAVING ON THE SECOND STATE. THERE MAY BE OTHER STATES THAT WE HAVE NOT SEEN.

STATE 1 - (1822) - THIS IS THE COPY DESCRIBED. THE UPPER REACHES OF THE NANTICOKE AND THE MANOKIN RIVERS HAVE BEEN FILLED IN WITH DARKENED ENGRAVED LINES TO INDICATE WATER, BUT NONE OF THE OTHER RIVERS ARE SO TREATED.

STATE 2 - (1822?) - ALL OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND ITS TRIBUTARIES IN THE MARYLAND AREA AND MOST OF THE DELAWARE BAY AND ATLANTIC COASTLINE ARE ALSO FILLED IN WITH ENGRAVED LINES TO INDICATE WATER. IN WESTERN MARYLAND, "CONEGOCHEAGAE CR." HAS BEEN ADDED AT AN ANGLE TO THE NE, JUST NORTH OF HAGARSTOWN. "GEORGETOWN" HAS BEEN ADDED NORTH OF WASHINGTON. "SMITH PT" HAS BEEN ADDED IN FINE SCRIPT JUST WEST OF TANGIER ISLAND. "PATAPSCO R.", "SEVERN R.", "KENT PT.", "HOOPER I.", POEOMOKE B", AND "SWAN I." HAVE BEEN ADDED IN THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AREA. IN DELAWARE, "INDIAN R." WAS ADDED. SEE MAP # 322D6.

DATA IS FROM OBSERVATION OF COPIES OF THE MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS TWO COPIES OF THE MAP. ONE IS STATE 1, WHICH IS IN BLACK AND WHITE. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF BB023-2N AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-241. A SECOND IS STATE 2, IN FULL COLOR, WITH AN ACQ. # OF BB023-2N AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-224.
