"SMITH'S MAP IS PRINTED FROM AN ENGRAVED COPPERPLATE, WHICH IS THE PROPERTY OF A GENTLEMAN OF THIS CITY, WHO OBTAINED IT FROM A TOWN IN PENNSYLVANIA WHEN IT WAS FOUND IN A LOT OF OLD METAL IMPORTED FROM ENGLAND. AN EXAMINATION OF IT PROVES THAT IT IS THE ONE WHICH WAS ENGRAVED FOR AND USED IN THE PUBLICATION OF THE REPRINT OF SMITH'S HISTORY... THE...MAPS WERE PRINTED... BY ORDER OF THE SENATE, BY RESOLUTION ADOPTED FEBRUARY 28, 1873." THE MAP IS MOST EASILY IDENTIFIED BY THE ABSENCE OF THE NAME OF WILLIAM HOLE, WHICH HAS BEEN OMITTED FROM THE IMPRINT IN THE CARTOUCHE. IN ADDITION, THE ENGRAVING STYLE IS QUITE DIFFERENT. THE REPRINT EDITION WAS PRODUCED BY FRANCIS WALLER GILMER AND JOHN HOLT RICE, WHO WERE MEMBERS OF THE WILLIAM WIRT LITERARY CIRCLE IN RICHMOND. IT WAS REVIEWED IN THE NORTH AMERICAN REVIEW, APRIL, 1832. THE MAP MEASURES 31.7 X 40.7 CM AND IS ORIENTED WITH WEST TO THE TOP.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THIS MAP IS THE SECOND EDITION OF THE JOHN SMITH MAP.
1ST. ED. - (1612) - SEE MAP # 112S5 FOR A COMPLETE REVIEW OF THE 12 STATES OF THIS EDITION.
2ND. ED. - (1819) - THIS IS THE MAP AS DESCRIBED HEREIN. IT CAN EASILY BE IDENTIFIED BECAUSE OF THE ABSENCE OF THE LINE IN THE IMPRINT "GRAVEN BY WILLIAM HOLE". OTHERWISE, THIS EDITION WAS COPIED FROM STATE 10 OF THE 1ST EDITION. THE STYLE OF THE ENGRAVING IS DIFFERENT THAN IN EDITION 1. THE LONGITUDE MARKS 311-307 ARE PRESENT, BUT NO NOTE IS MADE AS TO THE LOCATION OF THE PRIME MERIDIAN. IN 1980, WRITER WAS TOLD THAT THE ORIGINAL COPPERPLATE FOR THIS EDITION STILL EXISTS AND MIGHT BE AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE, BUT WAS UNABLE TO LOCATE IT.
HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : HFC HAS A COPY OF THIS MAP IN OUTLINE COLORING. IT ALSO HAS THREE COPIES, STATE 6 (VERNER) IN A 1627 ED.
