DESCRIPTION : VERY LITTLE IS KNOWN OF THIS
SMALL, SKETCHY, BLACK AND WHITE MAP, WHICH COVERS FROM BALTIMORE TO
ANNAPOLIS AND FROM THE CHESAPEAKE SHORE TO WEST OF BALTIMORE.
RELATIVELY FEW PLACE NAMES ARE GIVEN, EXCEPT FOR LAND POINTS ALONG
THE PATAPSCO RIVER AND THE BAY. FOUR SYMBOLS SHOWING CHAPELS ARE
GIVEN, BUT NOT FURTHER IDENTIFIED. PHILLIPS MAPS STATES
THAT THIS MAP IS FROM JOHN MELISH'S A GEOGRAPHICAL DESCRIPTION
OF THE UNITED STATES. SABIN #s (47430 & 47431) INDICATE THAT
THE FIRST EDITION OF THIS PUBLICATION WITH 3 MAPS WAS PUBLISHED IN
PHILADELPHIA BY JOHN MELISH IN 1815, WITH THE NAME A
GEOGRAPHICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE UNITED STATES; WITH TOPOGRAPHICAL
TABLES OF THE COUNTRIES, TOWNS, POPULATION, &c." A PUBLICATION
ENTITLED "A GEOGRAPHICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE UNITED STATES, WITH THE
CONTIGUOUS BRITISH AND SPANISH POSSESSIONS WAS PUBLISHED IN
1816 WITH 5 MAPS. A SECOND EDITION WAS PUBLISHED IN 1816, WITH 4
MAPS. A THIRD EDITION WITH 4 MAPS CAME OUT IN 1818. A NEW
EDITION, GREATLY IMPROVED WITH ONE MAP WAS PUBLISHED IN 1822.
A.T. GOODRICH PUBLISHED AN EDITION IN NEW YORK IN 1826 WITH "MAPS"
AND A FINAL EDITION WAS DONE IN PHILADELPHIA IN 1850. NO WORK HAS
BEEN DONE YET TO EXAMINE THESE VOLUMES AND COMPARE THE MAPS. HOWES
INDICATES THAT A GEOGRAPHICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE UNITED
STATES WAS "ISSUED TO ACCOMPANY MELISH'S MAP OF THE UNITED
STATES, WHICH WAS SOLD SEPARATELY AND ACCOMPANIED NONE OF THE
EDITIONS. THIS LARGE MAP [35" X 57"] WAS THE FIRST PRESENTING THE
ENTIRE COUNTRY FROM COAST TO COAST..."
