DESCRIPTION : THIS NOTEWORTHY COASTAL CHART OF
ANNAPOLIS HARBOR AND THE CHESAPEAKE BAY NEAR THE HARBOR WAS
PREPARED IN 1818 FOR THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS INVESTIGATING THE
DEFENSE OF THE ATLANTIC COAST FOLLOWING THE WAR OF 1812. IT IS IN
MANUSCRIPT PEN AND INK WITH WATERCOLOR WASH. IT IS BASED ON A
SURVEY BY JONATHAN W. SHERBURNE. SCHWARTZ & EHRENBERG NOTE THAT
THE BOARD WAS COMPOSED OF BOTH ARMY AND NAVY OFFICERS, WHO
UNDERTOOK TO HAVE A NUMBER OF SURVEYS DONE ALONG THE EAST COAST
DURING THAT DECADE. COLOR TINTS AND CONTOUR LINES DEPICT DEPTHS
BELOW MEAN SEA LEVEL. SOUNDINGS ARE SHOWN IN FEET AND FATHOMS. A
SCHEMATIC DIAGRAM OF THE CITY OF ANNAPOLIS IS GIVEN. THIS
MANUSCRIPT CHART IS LOCATED IN THE RECORDS OF THE OFFICE OF THE
CHIEF OF ENGINEERS, NATIONAL ARCHIVES, WASHINGTON, D.C.
GOEDECKE'S CHART WAS USED AS AN INSET IN 1819 IN THE TOP RIGHT
CORNER OF A LARGER CHART OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND THE PATAPSCO
RIVER BY THE MARINE INSURANCE COMPANIES OF BALTIMORE UNDER THE
DIRECTION OF LEWIS BRANTZ AND PUBLISHED BY FIELDING LUCAS JR. THE
TABLE OF TRIANGLES AND THE ACCOMPANYING DIAGRAM ARE OMITTED IN THAT
1819 USE. SEE MAP # 319B5.
