DESCRIPTION : THIS SMALL COLORED MAP SHOWS COUNTIES, ROADS AND ROAD DISTANCES. NO DETAILS ARE GIVEN FOR DELAWARE OR VIRGINIA, BUT THE MOUNTAINS ARE SHOWN EXTENDED A SHORT DISTANCE INTO WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA. THIS MAP WAS FIRST INCLUDED IN LUCAS'S EARLIEST ATLAS ENTITLED A NEW AND ELEGANT GENERAL ATLAS CONTAINING MAPS OF EACH OF THE UNITED STATES, 31 PLATES, BALTIMORE, 1814. PHILLIPS # 3542 NOTES A COPY OF THE ATLAS WHICH HE TENTATIVELY DATED 1816 BECAUSE OF A MAP OF VIRGINIA WITH THAT DATE IN IT. THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN IS BASED ON THE SAMUEL LEWIS MAP OF THE STATE OF MARYLAND IN 1794 (SEE MAP # 294L5). THE MAPS FOR LUCAS'S ATLAS WERE DRAWN BY LEWIS AND ENGRAVED BY HENRY S. TANNER, ALTHOUGH LEWIS IS NOT NAMED ON THE MAP. FOSTER SAYS THAT THE NEXT EDITION OF THIS ATLAS WITH 54 PLATES (SIMILAR TO PHILLIPS # 3542) WAS PUBLISHED IN 1817, BUT THAT THE EXISTENCE OF SEVERAL KNOWN VARIANT EDITIONS INDICATES THAT LUCAS BOUND UP ATLASES AT INTERVALS AS IMPROVED MAPS BECAME AVAILABLE.

LUCAS LIVED FROM 1781 TO 1854. HE WAS THE ONLY PRODUCER OF ATLASES LIVING IN BALTIMORE AT THE TIME. IN ALL, HE PUBLISHED SEVEN ATLASES AND CONTRIBUTED 20 ORIGINAL MAPS FOR AN ATLAS BY CAREY. HE PREPARED MORE THAN 50 MAPS WHICH HE SOLD SINGLY OR WHICH WERE INCLUDED AS FOLDING PLATES IN OTHER BOOKS. AFTER 1830 HE CEASED ISSUING ATLASES AND CONFINED HIMSELF TO LOCAL MAPS.

SAMUEL LEWIS WAS BORN IN 1754. HE TAUGHT DRAWING AND WRITING AND WAS A GEOGRAPHER. HIS FIRST MAPS WERE DONE FOR THE 1795 AMERICAN EDITION OF GUTHERIE'S GEOGRAPHY FOR MATHEW CAREY. HE LATER FORMED A PARTNERSHIP WITH AARON ARROWSMITH AND IN 1804 PUBLISHED A NEW AND ELEGANT GENERAL ATLAS. ALL THE AMERICAN MAPS WERE DRAWN BY LEWIS AND ENGRAVED BY BENJAMIN TANNER AND OTHERS. LEWIS DIED IN OCTOBER 1822 IN LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.

DATA IS FROM JAMES FOSTER'S ARTICLE ON LUCAS IN THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE AMERICAN ANTIQUARIAN SOCIETY, PHILLIPS ATLASES, RISTOW'S AMERICAN MAPS AND MAPMAKERS, AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : ONLY A SINGLE EDITION AND STATE ARE KNOWN TO WRITER, AS DESCRIBED.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A GOOD COLORED COPY, WITH ONE BROWN SPOT IN THE TOP RIGHT CORNER. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF G018-DEG AND A MDHR # OF G1399-108.
