MAP #: 307A5
CARTOGRAPHER : ANONYMOUS
DATE: 1807
SHORT TITLE : INVESTISSEMENT ET ATTAQUE D'YORK DANS LA VIRGINIE.
REMAINING TITLE & ID : (NO CARTOUCHE, LEFT SIDE BELOW CENTER). "XIV" (RIGHT TOP MARGIN). ESCHELLE DE VERGES (BELOW TITLE). 4 POINT COMPASS ROSE (TOP RIGHT CORNER). LONGITUDE AND LATITUDE (NOT SHOWN).
DATA IS FROM VERNER'S "MAPS OF THE YORKTOWN CAMPAIGN", SABIN AND WINDSOR, VI, 552 AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES OF THE MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : THERE IS SOME CONFUSION ON THE SEQUENCE AND NUMBER OF EDITIONS AND STATES OF THIS MAP. VERNER IDENTIFIES THREE EDITIONS OF JOHN MARSHALL'S LIFE OF GEORGE WASHINGTON, TWO IN ENGLISH AND ONE IN FRENCH. SABIN NOTES AN 1838 PHILADELPHIA EDITION OF MARSHALL'S BOOK "WRITTEN FOR THE USE OF SCHOOLS", A HAMBURG EDITION AND A DUTCH EDITION (1805-9). AT LEAST THE DUTCH EDITION HAD THE ATLAS, SO THERE MAY HAVE BEEN ONE OR MORE OTHER ISSUES AND/OR EDITIONS OF THE MAP.
ONE EDITION - (1807) - THIS IS INDICATED BY VERNER AS PLATE NO. IX OF MARSHALL'S LIFE OF GEORGE WASHINGTON, PHILADELPHIA: C.P. WAYNE, 1807, ENGRAVED BY FRANCIS SHALLUS. VERNER GIVES A MEASUREMENT OF 27.3 X 22.5 CM, BUT DOES NOT INDICATE WHETHER THIS IS THE MAP OR THE PLATE. THE COPY OF THE MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION IS 23.2 X 21.2 CM. IT DOES NOT EXTEND AS FAR WEST AS THE OTHER EDITIONS, BUT GOES FURTHER NORTH. THE WINDSOR ILLUSTRATION, CITED BY VERNER, DOES NOT SHOW ANY TITLE OR THE SCALE. THE COLLECTION'S COPY IS ENTITLED "PLAN OF THE INVESTMENT AND ATTACK OF YORK IN VIRGINIA" (IN THE BOTTOM LEFT CORNER) AND HAS THE SCALE. SEE MAP # 307S5.
ANOTHER EDITION - (1807) - THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN. IT INCLUDES THE WORDS "CHEMIN DE WILLIAMSBOURG" OVER THE POSITION SHOWN FOR M. DE St. SIMON ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE MAP. THE TITLE IS IN FRENCH AND THE SCALE IN FRENCH IS ALSO PRESENT. VERNER MEASURES IT 25.4 X 35 CM. BUT DOESN'T INDICATE WHETHER THIS IS THE MAP OR PLATE. THE COPY OF THE MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION IS 20.6 X 21.8 CM.
ANOTHER EDITION - (1834?) - THIS MAP IS PROPORTIONED MORE LIKE THE FRENCH THAN THE PRIOR AMERICAN EDITION. THE MAP WAS PUBLISHED BY J. CRISSY IN PHILADELPHIA IN THE SECOND EDITION OF MARSHALL'S LIFE OF GEORGE WASHINGTON AND WAS ENGRAVED BY J. YEAGER. IT HAS "9" RATHER THAN "IX" AS THE MAP NUMBER AND HAS THE LEGEND "ENGRAVED BY J. YEAGER" IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT MARGIN. A TITLE HAS BEEN ADDED IN THE BOTTOM LEFT AS FOLLOWS: "PLAN OF THE INVESTMENT AND ATTACK OF YORK IN VIRGINIA". A SCALE IN YARDS (1800 = 2 1/4") HAS BEEN LOCATED BELOW THE TITLE. VERNER NOTES THAT THE COPY HE DESCRIBED WAS PLATE 8. THUS, THERE WERE PROBABLY TWO ISSUES AND/OR STATES OF THIS EDITION. SEE MAP # 334Y5.
DATA IS FROM VERNER, WINDSOR, SABIN AND FROM EXAMINATION OF THE THREE STATES OF THE MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A BEAUTIFUL COPY OF THE FIRST ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDITION OF THE MAP IN OUTLINE COLORING. IT HAS EXTREMELY WIDE MARGINS AND IS ON GOOD HEAVY PAPER. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF MH016-DLI AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-481. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS A COPY OF THIS FRENCH EDITION IN COLOR AND IN GOOD CONDITION ON HEAVY PAPER, EXCEPT THAT THE TOP MARGIN HAS BEEN EXTENDED. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF O021-DFG AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-12. FINALLY, THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS A COPY OF THE CRISSY EDITION IN A COPY OF THE ATLAS TO MARSHALL'S LIFE OF WASHINGTON, PHILADELPHIA: 1834. THE ATLAS IS IN POOR CONDITION WITH THE BINDING LOOSE AND CONSIDERABLE BROWNING, NOT AFFECTING THIS MAP. THE ACQ. # IS DRB025-3Q* AND THE MDHR # IS MSA SC1399- 473.
