REMAINING TITLE & ID : CONTAINING THOSE OF NEW YORK, VERMONT, NEW HAMPSHIRE, MASSACHUSETS, CONNECTICUT, RHODE ISLAND, PENNSYLVANIA, NEW JERSEY, DELAWARE, MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA. FROM THE LATEST AUTHORITIES. BY JOHN CARY, ENGRAVER. 1806. (CIRCULAR CARTOUCHE, BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER). "LONDON: PUBLISHED BY J. CARY ENGRAVER & MAP-SELLER No. 181 STRAND SEPt. 1. 1806" (CENTER BOTTOM MARGIN). THREE DISTANCE SCALES (BELOW CARTOUCHE). LONGITUDE FROM GREENWICH (TOP AND BOTTOM BORDERS). LONGITUDE WEST FROM GREENWICH IS SHOWN IN BOTH THE TOP AND BOTTOM BORDERS AND LATITUDE IS GIVEN IN THE RIGHT AND LEFT BORDERS. PART OF THE MAP IS IN FULL COLOR AND PART IS IN OUTLINE COLOR. SEVERAL ODDITIES ARE EVIDENT ON THE MAP. CAPE MAY IS CALLED CAPE MARY. CAPE HENLOPEN IS CALLED CAPE JAMES. THE MAP SHOWS THE ENTIRE SOUTHERN PART OF THE DELMARVA PENINSULA AS PART OF MARYLAND.
CARY LIVED FROM CA. 1754 TO 1835. HE WAS AN ENGLISH CARTOGRAPHER, ENGRAVER, GLOBE MAKER AND PUBLISHER, WITH OVER 600 ORIGINAL MAPS TO HIS CREDIT. ACCORDING TO FORDHAM, CARY WAS APPRENTICED TO WILLIAM PALMER, ENGRAVER, OF NEW STREET SQUARE IN LONDON IN 1770 FOR SEVEN YEARS. THE EARLIEST WORK TO BEAR CARY'S NAME WAS A CANAL PLAN DATED 1779. FORDHAM INDICATES "IN 1808 CARY'S FIRST GENERAL ATLAS, WHICH HAD BEEN MANY YEARS IN PREPARATION, AND THE MAPS OF WHICH BEGAN TO APPEAR IN PARTS AS EARLY AS 1799, WAS COMPLETED AND PUBLISHED, UNDER THE TITLE NEW UNIVERSAL ATLAS. IT WAS REPRINTED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, A SECOND EDITION BEING ISSUED IN 1819.
"CARY, COMMENCING HIS CAREER AS AN ENGRAVER, AND BECOMING, AS TIME WENT ON, A GEOGRAPHICAL PUBLISHER ON A LARGE SCALE, NO DOUBT CEASED, IN CONSEQUENCE, TO DEVOTE HIMSELF PERSONALLY TO HIS ORIGINAL ART. UP TO NEARLY THE END OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY MAPS ARE SIGNED BY HIM: 'J. CARY SCULPt.', 'ENGRAVED BY J. CARY', AND IN OTHER FORMS, BUT, FROM THAT TIME THERE IS NO EVIDENCE OF HIS CONTINUING TO WORK AS AN ENGRAVER, THOUGH HIS NAME IS CARRIED ON ON THE PLATES TO AS LATE AS 1831. IT IS PROBABLE THAT HE HELD THE POSITION OF DIRECTOR AND MANAGER OF A BUSINESS EMPLOYING A WHOLE STAFF OF CARTOGRAPHIC ARTISTS AND ASSISTANTS FROM AT LEAST AS EARLY AS THE BEGINNING OF THE LAST DECADE OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY."
DATA IS FROM FORDHAM, PHILLIPS MAPS, PHILLIPS ATLASES, TOOLEY'S DICTIONARY, DEALER MAP CATALOGS, AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
