MAP SHOWS TWO EAST-WEST ROADS IN THE INSET AND DOESN'T NAME THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ALTHOUGH THE DISTRICT IS SHOWN. LONGITUDE IS WEST FROM PHILADELPHIA (TOP BORDER) AND WEST FROM LONDON (BOTTOM BORDER). LATITUDE (RIGHT AND LEFT BORDERS).
ADDITIONAL STATES WERE PUBLISHED IN 1801, WITH A SIMILAR 1802 ISSUE AND IN 1813 WITH AN IDENTICAL 1814 ISSUE. "A NEW MAP OF MARYLAND" WAS ALSO PUBLISHED IN 1814 AND APPEARED IN CAREY'S GENERAL ATLAS. IT WAS LARGER THAN THIS SERIES AND QUITE DIFFERENT, ALTHOUGH WITH THE SAME TITLE.
MATHEW CAREY, A NATIVE OF DUBLIN, CAME TO PHILADELPHIA IN 1784 WHERE HE FOUNDED A PRINTING AND PUBLISHING FIRM THE FOLLOWING YEAR. HIS FIRST CARTOGRAPHIC EFFORT, A GENERAL ATLAS FOR THE PRESENT WAR, WAS PUBLISHED IN 1794. IN 1795, CAREY PUBLISHED THE GENERAL ATLAS FOR CAREY'S EDITION OF GUTHRIE'S GEOGRAPHY IMPROVED. THE SIXTEEN MAPS OF AMERICAN STATES IN CAREY'S GENERAL ATLAS FOR THE PRESENT WAR, WERE REPRINTED WITH FIVE OTHERS IN HIS AMERICAN ATLAS, ALSO PUBLISHED IN 1795. CAREY HAD A NUMBER OF ENGRAVERS WHO DID CONTRACT WORK FOR HIM INCLUDING WILLIAM BARKER (WHO DID THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN), JOSEPH SCOTT, JAMES THACKARA AND JOHN VALLANCE OF PHILADELPHIA, SAMUEL HILL OF BOSTON, AMOS DOOLITTLE OF NEW HAVEN, BENJAMIN TANNER OF NEW YORK AND SAMUEL LEWIS. CAREY RETIRED IN 1822 AND THE BUSINESS WAS CARRIED ON BY HIS SON HENRY C. CAREY AND HIS SON-IN-LAW ISAAC LEA UNDER THE CAREY & LEA IMPRINT.
DATA IS FROM RISTOW, WHEAT & BRUN, PHILLIPS ATLASES, FROM AN EXAMINATION AND COMPARISON OF THE ATLASES IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE STATES OF THIS MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : ONLY A SINGLE EDITION IS KNOWN IN FOUR STATES AND AT LEAST SIX ISSUES.
STATE 1 - (1796) - NO ROADS ARE SHOWN AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA IS ABSENT. THIS STATE WAS PUBLISHED AS MAP # 13 IN CAREY'S AMERICAN POCKET ATLAS IN 1796. (SEE MAP # 296C5).
STATE 2 - (1801) - ROADS HAVE BEEN ADDED, GOING DIRECTLY THROUGH PREVIOUSLY ENGRAVED NAMES IN SOME INSTANCES. THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA HAS BEEN ADDED, ALTHOUGH NOT NAMED. THIS STATE WAS PUBLISHED AS MAP # 13 IN THE SECOND EDITION OF CAREY'S AMERICAN POCKET ATLAS, PHILADELPHIA: PRINTED BY H. SWEITZER FOR MATHEW CAREY, 1801. (SEE MAP # 301C5).
- (1802 ISSUE) - THE MAP WAS REISSUED UNCHANGED IN CAREY'S MINOR AMERICAN ATLAS, PHILADELPHIA: 1802 AS MAP # 13.
STATE 3 - (1805) - THIS STATE WAS EXTENSIVELY REVISED TO INCLUDE MORE ROADS AND NAMES AND PUBLISHED AS MAP # 13 IN THE THIRD EDITION OF CAREY'S AMERICAN POCKET ATLAS, PHILADELPHIA: MATHEW CAREY, 1805. IN THIS STATE, THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA CONTINUES TO BE SHOWN, AS IN THE 2ND STATE, BUT NOT NAMED. TWO MAIN EAST-WEST ROADS ARE SHOWN IN THE WESTERN INSET. THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.
- (1810 ISSUE) - THE MAP WAS REISSUED UNCHANGED FROM THE 1805 STATE AS MAP # 13 IN THE 1810 CAREY'S MINOR ATLAS, THIRD EDITION, PHILADELPHIA: MATHEW CAREY, 1810.
STATE 4 - (1813) - THIS STATE HAS A FEW MORE ROADS AND 19-20 ADDITIONAL NAMES THAN STATE 3. IT WAS PUBLISHED AS MAP # 13 IN THE FOURTH EDITION OF CAREY'S AMERICAN POCKET ATLAS, PHILADELPHIA: MATHEW CAREY, 1813. FOR THE FIRST TIME "ALLEGANY MTS." ARE NAMED IN THE INSET, AS IS THE "DISt. OF COLUMBIA". (SEE MAP # 313C5).
- (1814 ISSUE) - THE MAP WAS REISSUED UNCHANGED FROM THE 1813 STATE AS MAP # 13 IN THE 1814 RELEASE OF THE FOURTH EDITION OF CAREY'S AMERICAN POCKET ATLAS, PHILADELPHIA: MATHEW CAREY (WHOSE ADDRESS HAD CHANGED TO "NO. 121, CHESNUT STREET" IN THIS YEAR FROM "NO. 122, MARKET STREET" IN 1813). NOTE THAT ANOTHER MAP, LARGER IN SIZE AND DIVIDED INTO COUNTIES WAS ALSO PUBLISHED IN 1814 AND LATER IN 1817 AND 1818 IN MATHEW CAREY'S GENERAL ATLAS. THIS IS A TOTALLY DIFFERENT MAP ALTHOUGH IT HAS THE SAME TITLE. (SEE MAP # 314C5 FOR THIS LATTER MAP).
