DESCRIPTION : THIS TOPOGRAPHICAL MAP SHOWS
ROADS, COUNTY NAMES AND LARGE SETTLEMENTS. IT IS THE SECOND
DERIVATIVE OF THE SAMUEL LEWIS MAP OF 1794 (SEE MAP # 294L5). IT IS
A REDUCED SIZE (19 X 24 CM.) VERSION OF THE FIRST DERIVATIVE (SEE
MAP # 296W5) AND ITS COVERAGE AND NOMENCLATURE IS ESSENTIALLY
UNCHANGED FROM THAT OF THE WINTERBOTHAM DERIVATIVE. "LEWES" IS
SHOWN AS "LEWISTOWN". THIS MAP WAS INCLUDED IN JOHN PAYNE'S A
NEW AND COMPLETE UNIVERSAL GEOGRAPHY, NEW YORK: I. LOW, 1799,
4, OPPOSITE 345. IT WAS DRAWN BY F. LUCAS AND ENGRAVED BY ANDERSON.
THE MAP WAS REPUBLISHED AS A SEPARATE IN 1799 WITH THE STATEMENT
BELOW THE NEAT LINE THEN READING: "ENGRAVED FOR NEW ENCYCLOPEDIA,
PUBLISH'D BY I. LOW NEW YORK."
