DESCRIPTION : THIS IS STATE 2 OF THE WILLIAM WINTERBOTHAM MAP WITH THE SAME NAME OF 1796. IT APPEARED IN WINTERBOTHAM'S THE AMERICAN ATLAS, PUBLISHED BY JOHN REID. REID ERASED THE ORIGINAL IMPRINT "WAYLAND, REID & SMITH", BUT PORTIONS STILL SHOW THROUGH. NO OTHER PLATE CHANGES ARE NOTED. THE WINTERBOTHAM MAP WAS A DERIVATIVE OF THE SAMUEL LEWIS MAP OF 1794. (SEE MAP # 294L5), BUT WAS NOT CREDITED TO LEWIS. THE REID ATLAS ACCOMPANIED AN HISTORICAL, GEOGRAPHICAL, COMMERCIAL AND PHILOSOPHICAL VIEW OF THE UNITED STATES, BY AN ENGLISHMAN, WILLIAM WINTERBOTHAM, WHO COPIED WHOLE SECTIONS WORD FOR WORD FROM MORSE.

DATA IS FROM PAPENFUSE & COALE, WHEAT & BRUN AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

STATE 2 - (1796) - THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN. THE IMPRINT HAS BEEN CHANGED TO "PUBLISHED BY JOHN REID, NEW YORK." ERASURE OF THE PRIOR IMPRINT IS IMPERFECT AND PORTIONS SHOW THROUGH THE NEW IMPRINT. NO OTHER PLATE CHANGES ARE NOTED.
