DESCRIPTION : THIS SMALL UNIMPORTANT MAP WAS PUBLISHED IN JOSEPH SCOTT'S THE UNITED STATES GAZETTEER, PHILADELPHIA: F. & R. BAILEY, 1795, OPPOSITE "MARYLAND". IT WAS LATER PUBLISHED BY F. & R. BAILEY, B. DAVIS, AND H. & P. RICE IN JOSEPH SCOTT'S AN ATLAS OF THE UNITED STATES AS MAP # 12 IN 1796. THIS IS INDICATED BY PHILLIPS AS BEING THE EARLIEST ATLAS OF THE UNITED STATES, EVEN THOUGH THE SAME MAPS APPEARED IN THE UNITED STATES GAZETEER. SABIN QUOTES THE PREFACE OF THE UNITED STATES GAZETTEER AS FOLLOWS: "WHEN WE REFLECT THAT NO GAZETTEER HAS EVER BEEN PUBLISHED OF THE UNITED STATES, I MAY WITH SOME DEGREE OF JUSTICE SAY, I HAVE TRODDEN AN UNBEATEN PATH...THE MAPS I HAVE DRAWN AND ENGRAVED MYSELF..." THE MAP WAS ALSO REPRODUCED IN JOSEPH SCOTT'S ATLAS OF THE UNITED STATES 1795-1800, NO. 9.

THE PATOMAC RIVER IS CONSISTENTLY SO SPELLED. BELLE AIR, HAVRE DE GRACE, LEONARD T., PALUXENT R. AND WIGHCOMICO ALL APPEAR. THE YOUGHIOGINI R. IS SO SPELLED.

A SECOND STATE APPEARED IN 1807 IN SCOTT'S THE NEW AND UNIVERSAL GAZETEER, WITH ONLY SOME RECUTTING ON THE PLATE. SCOTT, PRIOR TO THE PUBLICATION OF HIS GAZETTEER AND ATLAS DID CONTRACT ENGRAVING FOR MATHEW CAREY AND OTHERS.

DATA IS FROM WHEAT & BRUN, SABIN, RISTOW AND PHILLIPS ATLASES.

EDITION & STATE INFO : ONLY A SINGLE EDITION IS KNOWN IN TWO STATES.

ED. 1 - STATE 1-(1795)- THIS IS THE STATE DESCRIBED.

- STATE 2-(1807)- THIS STATE APPEARED IN SCOTT'S THE NEW AND UNIVERSAL GAZETTEER. SOME LINES HAVE BEEN RECUT BUT NO GEOGRAPHICAL CHANGES OR ADDITIONS HAVE BEEN MADE. THE SHORELINE OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY HAS BEEN RECUT. SINCE THE SHADING HAS NOT BEEN CHANGED, THE ISLANDS AND LAND ARE SHARPLY OUTLINED AGAINST THE WORN SHADING OF THE WATER.

DATA IS FROM WHEAT & BRUN.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A BLACK AND WHITE COPY OF STATE ONE DESCRIBED HEREIN WITH AN ACQ. # OF C017-DIG AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-423.
