DESCRIPTION : VERNER DESCRIBES THIS CHART AS FOLLOWS: THIS IS A SIMPLE ENGRAVING EMPLOYING VERY FEW LINES TO INDICATE THE AREA FROM CAPE CHARLES ON THE NORTH AND POINT COMFORT ON THE WEST TO SOUTH OF CAPE HENRY AND EAST INTO THE ATLANTIC. THE MAP ILLUSTRATES THE POSITIONS OF THE FLEET DURING THE BATTLE OF YORKTOWN, WHICH ARE REPRESENTED BY SMALL OVALS DEPICTING SHIPS. DOTTED LINES ARE USED TO ILLUSTRATE THE LINE MOVEMENT OF THE FLEETS WITH EXPLANATORY NOTES ALONG THE LINES.

THIS MAP APPEARED IN CHARLES STEDMAN'S THE HISTORY OF THE ORIGIN, PROGRESS AND TERMINATION OF THE AMERICAN WAR, LONDON: PRINTED FOR THE AUTHOR AND SOLD BY J. MURRAY, 1794, VOL. II, BETWEEN 400 AND 401. IT WAS LATER REPRODUCED IN THE MAGAZINE OF AMERICAN HISTORY, VOL. VII, 1881, 369.

SOTHEBY'S OFFERED WHAT THEY CHARACTERIZED AS A 1792 FIRST EDITION OF THE MAP, BUT NO DETAILS OF SUCH AN EDITION ARE KNOWN TO WRITER AND THE DATE MAY HAVE BEEN IN ERROR.

DATA IS FROM VERNER'S "MAPS OF THE YORKTOWN CAMPAIGN" AND NEBENZAHL'S BIBLIOGRAPHY.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THE EDITION AND STATE INFORMATION HAS NOT YET BEEN RESEARCHED. HOWEVER, SOTHEBY'S OFFERED A COPY OF THE MAP (ITEM 469) IN THEIR SALE # 5128A. THEY CHARACTERIZED THE MAP AS THE FIRST EDITION AND THEY DATED IT 1792. THE EDITION DESCRIBED HEREIN IS TAKEN FROM VERNER AND NEBENZAHL. THE EXISTENCE OF TWO DISTINCT EDITIONS IS CONJECTURAL AND THE 1792 DATE MAY HAVE BEEN ERRONEOUS.
