DESCRIPTION : THIS OBLONG MAP IS A SIMPLIFIED VERSION OF THE FRY AND JEFFERSON MAP OF VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND OF 1753 (SEE MAP # 253F5). IT COVERS THE AREA FROM NEW CASTLE, DELAWARE IN THE NORTH TO BACK BAY IN THE SOUTH (SOUTH OF CAPE HENRY) AND FROM EAST OF CAPE MAY, N.J. TO THE CONFLUENCE OF THE OHIO AND THE GREAT KANHAWA RIVERS IN AN AREA ERRONEOUSLY TITLED "INDIANA" (NOW WEST VIRGINIA). THE MAP SHOWS PRINCIPAL ROADS, MOUNTAIN RANGES, AND SWAMPS. WASHINGTON, D.C. IS NOT YET DESIGNATED. THE BOUNDARIES OF VIRGINIA WITH ITS NEIGHBORS ARE NOT SHOWN EXCEPT ON THE DELMARVA PENINSULA.

THIS MAP WAS ENGRAVED BY I. MUTLOW OF 6 JAMES ST., COVENT GARDENS, LONDON. IT WAS PUBLISHED IN LONDON IN 1794 BY JOHN STOCKDALE IN REV. JEDEDIAH MORSE'S THE AMERICAN GEOGRAPHY; OR A VIEW OF THE PRESENT SITUATION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA...., LONDON: FOR J. STOCKDALE, 1794, AS MAP # 16, BETWEEN PAGES 474 AND 475. WHILE THIS BOOK CANNOT BE REGARDED AS AN ATLAS, IT HAS A COLLECTION OF THE EARLIEST MAPS OF THE STATES OF THE UNION. THE FIRST EDITION CONTAINED OVER 10 PAGES OF TEXT PERTAINING TO MARYLAND. SOME OF THE COMMENTS WERE QUITE NEGATIVE AND WERE NOT WELL RECEIVED. THESE WERE DELETED BY THE THIRD OF SEVEN EDITIONS.

VERNER NOTES THAT THE EDITION OF MORSE'S THE AMERICAN GEOGRAPHY IN WHICH THIS MAP AND SEVERAL OTHERS APPEAR SHOULD NOT BE CONFUSED WITH THE OTHER EDITION WITH A SIMILAR TITLE PUBLISHED IN THE SAME YEAR BUT WITH THE PURCELL MAP ALONE.

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS MAPS AND ATLASES, FROM PAPENFUSE & COALE, AND FROM VERNER'S NOTES.

EDITION & STATE INFO : ONLY THE SINGLE EDITION AND STATE DESCRIBED ARE KNOWN TO EXIST.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A BEAUTIFUL CLEAN COPY IN OUTLINE COLORING, WITH AN ACQ. # OF BB023-DTD AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-55.
