DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP IS THE FIRST GENERAL MAP OF MARYLAND PUBLISHED IN THE USA FOLLOWING THE EDITION OF LORD BALTIMORE'S OWN PLAN WHICH IS THOUGHT TO HAVE BEEN ENGRAVED BY BENJAMIN FRANKLIN IN 1733 (SEE MAP 233F5). SOME TOPOGRAPHICAL FEATURES ARE NOTED AS WELL AS NAMES OF COUNTIES, ALTHOUGH NO COUNTY BOUNDARIES ARE INCLUDED. MANY ROADS AND TOWNS ARE SHOWN. HOWEVER, THE MAP REPRESENTS LITTLE ADVANCE IN GEOGRAPHIC KNOWLEDGE OVER PREVIOUS MAPS BUT WAS ONE OF THE EARLY MAPS TO DESIGNATE THE LOCATION OF WASHINGTON, D.C.

THIS MAP IS THE FIRST OF MANY TO COPE WITH MARYLAND'S IRREGULAR SHAPE BY INCLUDING WESTERN MARYLAND AS AN INSET, THUS PERMITTING USE OF A LARGER SCALE THAN ON A NORMAL ATLAS PAGE. THE INSET AT THE LEFT CENTER IS ENTITLED "CONTINUATION OF THE POTOWMAC [SIC] RIVER, FROM FORT CUMBERLAND." SIZE OF THE INSET IS 3 13/16 X 3 15/16 INCHES. THE SCALE IS THE SAME AS THE REGULAR MAP. THE WESTERN BOUNDARY LINE IS SHOWN EXTENDING NORTH FROM THE SOURCE OF THE "POTOWMAC", WHICH IS INDICATED AS "SPRING HEAD" IN THE INSET. EVITTS CREEK, NEAR FT. CUMBERLAND IS SHOWN AS "EVETS CR."; "YOHIOGANY R." IS SHOWN FOR YOUGHIOGHENY. POTOMAC IS SPELLED THIS WAY AT THE MOUTH OF THE RIVER AND "POTOWMAC" ELSEWHERE ON THE MAP.

THIS MAP WAS ENGRAVED BY W. BARKER FOR USE IN GUTHRIE'S GEOGRAPHY IMPROVED (1794) AND APPEARED IN 1795 IN MATHEW CAREY'S CAREY'S AMERICAN ATLAS, # 12, THE FIRST ATLAS OF AMERICAN STATES. THE SAME MAP APPEARED IN THE SEPTEMBER, 1800 EDITION OF CAREY'S GENERAL ATLAS WITH THE NUMBER "35" ADDED AT THE TOP LEFT CORNER. IT ALSO APPEARED IN 1796 IN THE GENERAL ATLAS FOR CAREY'S EDITION OF GUTHRIE'S GEOGRAPHY IMPROVED, NO. 35. THE BORDERLINE BETWEEN MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA IS A STRAIGHT LINE RUNNING DUE EAST FROM SMITH'S POINT. DUE TO INACCURATE CONFIGURATION, IT BISECTS WATKINS POINT.

TWO DERIVATIVE MAPS ARE KNOWN. ONE WAS IN 1795 BY WILLIAM WINTERBOTHAM (SEE MAPS # 295W5 AND 296W6) AND ONE IN 1799 BY JOHN PAYNE (SEE MAPS # 299P5 AND 299P6). EACH MAP IS IN TWO STATES.

THERE IS CONFLICTING INFORMATION ON THIS MAP AND ADDITIONAL RESEARCH IS NECESSARY, ESPECIALLY ON ALL POST-1800 STATES. SOME OF THE DATA IS FROM WHEAT & BRUN, PHILLIPS MAPS, PHILLIPS ATLASES, AND MATHEWS AND SOME IS FROM OBSERVATION OF SEVERAL STATES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THIS INFORMATION IS VERY TENTATIVE AND REQUIRES ADDITIONAL RESEARCH. THE EDITIONS AND STATES THUS FAR IDENTIFIED OR REFERRED TO ARE:

1ST EDITION - 1ST STATE - (1794?) - THIS IS THE COPY DESCRIBED. IT WAS REFERRED TO IN WHEAT AND BRUN # 510. ABOVE THE NEAT LINE IS "GEOGRAPHY IMPROVED".

- 2ND STATE - (1795) - ABOVE THE TOP NEAT LINE APPEARS "ENGRAVED FOR CAREY'S AMERICAN EDITION OF GUTHRIE'S GEOGRAPHY MPROVED." IT WAS INCLUDED IN CAREY'S GENERAL ATLAS OF 1795. THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COPY HAS # 12 IN THE TOP RIGHT CORNER.( SEE MAP # 295L5).

- 3RD STATE - (1800) - THIS IS THE SAME AS THE SECOND STATE EXCEPT THAT "35" IS ADDED IN THE RIGHT TOP MARGIN. THIS SAME MAP APPEARS IN CAREY'S GENERAL ATLAS, EDITIONS OF 1800, 1802, AND 1804.

2ND EDITION - 1ST STATE - (1795?) - THIS MAP IS REFERRED TO ON PAGE 359 OF MATHEWS "BIBLIOGRAPHY AND CARTOGRAPHY". IT DOES NOT INCLUDE DELAWARE, WHICH IS IN THE FIRST EDITION. A COPY, ACCORDING TO MATHEWS, IS FOUND IN CAREY'S GENERAL ATLAS IMPROVED AND ENLARGED AS MAP # 16, PHILADELPHIA, 1795. WRITER HAS NOT SEEN THIS STATE OF THE MAP AND CANNOT INDEPENDENTLY CONFIRM ITS EXISTENCE.

- 2ND STATE - (1814) - THIS MAP IS VERY SIMILAR TO THE FIRST STATE AND MAY BE THE SAME. IT APPEARS IN CAREY'S GENERAL ATLAS IMPROVED AND ENLARGED. THE MERIDIAN OF THE CAPITOL AT WASHINGTON IS SHOWN IN THE BOTTOM BORDER. LONGITUDE IS GIVEN AS WEST FROM PHILADELPHIA IN THE BOTTOM BORDER AND WEST FROM LONDON IN THE TOP. "16" IS ADDED IN THE TOP RIGHT MARGIN. IT OCCURS IN LATER EDITIONS OF THE ATLAS, WITHOUT CHANGE.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A BLACK AND WHITE COPY OF STATE 2, WITH AN ACQ. # OF BB023-DGN AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-195. THE COLLECTION HAS THREE COPIES OF THE WINTERBOTHAM DERIVATIVE. STATE 1 OF THAT DERIVATIVE IS IN FULL COLOR WITH AN ACQ. # OF BB023-DTH AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-58. IT HAS TWO COPIES OF THE 2ND STATE OF THIS DERIVATIVE. ONE IS ON BLACK AND WHITE WITH AN ACQ. # OF PRS018-N2 AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-276. THE OTHER IS IN OUTLINE COLOR WITH AN ACQ. # OF A025- HGD AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-47. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS A BLACK AND WHITE COPY OF THE SECOND DERIVATIVE (SEE MAP # 299P5), STATE 1, WITH AN ACQ. # OF BB023-2N AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-48.
