DESCRIPTION : THIS LARGE SCALE MAP OF THE EAST COAST OF NORTH AMERICA FROM PHILADELPHIA TO THE NORTHERN BORDER OF FLORIDA HAS A FULL REPRESENTATION OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY. THE ENGRAVING FOR THE MAP IS BEAUTIFULLY DONE AND THE ORIGNAL COLOR IS IN DELICATE SHADES OF PINK, YELLOW, BLUE AND GREEN AND IS VERY DECORATIVE. CONSIDERABLE CARE IS SHOWN IN THE PLACEMENT OF MOUNTAINS, RIVERS AND POLITICAL BOUNDARIES, EXCEPT THAT THE MOUNTAIN RANGE DOWN THE CENTER OF THE DELMARVA PENINSULA DOESN'T EXIST. COUNTY NAMES ARE GIVEN, BUT NO COUNTY BOUNDARIES ARE SHOWN. SOUNDINGS IN FATHOMS ARE GIVEN FOR THE COASTAL REGIONS, INCLUDING ALL OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY. SHOAL AREAS ARE SHADED.

THE MAP WAS FIRST ISSUED BY THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT IN 1778 FOR THE USE OF THE FRENCH NAVY DURING THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR IN AMERICA. THE MAP APPEARED IN L'HYDROGRAPHIE FRANCOIS. PHILLIPS INDICATES THAT IT WAS IN VOLUME 2, MAP # 62 (WHICH CONFORMS TO THE NOTATION IN THE RIGHT TOP MARGIN). THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS HAS A NUMBER OF COPIES OF THIS PUBLICATION, WITH MAPS VARYING IN THEIR DATES FROM AS EARLY AS 1737 TO AS LATE AS 1807. M. DE SARTINE WAS IN CHARGE OF THE DEPARTEMENT DE LA MARINE WHEN THE MAP WAS DONE. THE EARLY MAPS ARE ATTRIBUTED TO JACQUES NICOLAS BELLIN, ALTHOUGH THIS MAP WAS DATED AND APPEARED IN THE 1778 EDITION OF L'HYDROGRAPHIE FRANCOIS, SIX YEARS AFTER BELLIN'S DEATH. IT WAS ENGRAVED BY PETIT. BELLIN WAS COMMISSIONED BY THE KING TO MAP ALL THE KNOWN COASTS OF THE WORLD AND THIS WAS ACHIEVED IN L'HYDROGRAPHIE FRANCAISE IN 1756-1765. BELLIN'S MAPS CONTINUED TO BE ISSUED AFTER HIS DEATH AND THE TITLE OF THE ATLAS WAS CHANGED TO L'HYDROGRAPHIE FRANCAISE RECUEIL DES CARTES MARINES...PAR FEU [LATE] M. BELLIN.

THE MAP WAS REISSUED c1793, WITH REFERENCES CHANGED FROM THE KING TO THE REPUBLIC OF FRANCE. IN THIS CONNECTION, THE MAP IN ITS c1793 STATES IS ONE OF RELATIVELY FEW THAT WAS ISSUED IN FRANCE IN THE FIRST FIVE YEARS AFTER THE FRENCH REVOLUTION. IT WAS FINALLY REENGRAVED AND REISSUED IN ROME IN 1799 AS A SEPARATE. GIOVANNI BRUN WAS THE ENGRAVER, BUT WE HAVE FOUND NO REFERENCES TO THE MAP AND DO NOT KNOW WHO PUBLISHED IT OR WHY.

DATA IS FROM TOOLEY, PHILLIPS ATLASES, P.J. RADFORD CATALOGUE 12 AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : TWO EDITIONS ARE KNOWN. THE FIRST, IN THREE STATES, WAS ISSUED IN FRANCE. THE SECOND, IN ONE STATE, WAS ISSUED IN ROME.

ED. 1 - STATE 1 - (1778) - THIS IS SIMILAR TO THE STATE DESCRIBED HEREIN EXCEPT FOR THESE DIFFERENCES: THE PHRASE "POUR LE SERVICE DES VAISSEAUX DU ROI" IS USED INSTEAD OF "POUR LE SERVICE DES VAISSEAUX FRANCAIS" IN THE TITLE AND FLEUR-DE-LIS ARE USED INSTEAD OF THE INITIALS "R" "F" IN THE DEPOT DE LA MARINE STAMP. SEE MAP # 278D6.

- STATE 2 - (c1793) - "POUR LE SERVICE DES VAISSEAUX FRANCAIS" REPLACES "POUR LE SERVICE DES VAISSEAUX DU ROI" IN THE TITLE. THE INITIALS "R"[EPUBLIC "F"[RANCAISE] REPLACE THE FLEUR-DE-LIS IN THE DEPOT DE LA MARINE STAMP. THE LINE PRINTED IN THE LEFT BOTTOM MARGIN "GRAVE PAR PETIT, GRAVEUR DE LA MARINE." CONTINUES TO BE SHOWN. THIS STATE HAS NOT BEEN SEEN BY THE WRITER, BUT WAS ADVERTISED AS ITEM # 109 IN THE P.J. RADFORD CATALOGUE # 12, IN DECEMBER, 1975. RADFORD ATTRIBUTES A DATE OF JUST AFTER 1792 TO ITS ISSUE. SEE MAP # 293D4.

- STATE 3 - (ca. 1793) - THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN. ED. 2 - (1799) - THE TITLE WAS UNCHANGED THROUGH "DE LA MARINE", WHICH NOW HAS A COMMA RATHER THAN A PERIOD FOLLOWING, THEN A TWO LINE "AVERTISSEMENT", SIMILAR TO THE THREE LINE ONE IN THE PRIOR EDITION. THIS IS FOLLOWED BY "SAVOIR", SIMILAR TO THE PRIOR EDITION, EXCEPT THAT THE LAST THREE LINES OF THE EARLIER EDITION ARE NOW DONE IN TWO AND THE FOLLOWING LINE IS ADDED: "GIO: BRUN SCUPIX. IN ROMA." THE ENGRAVING IS SOMEWHAT CRUDER, BUT IS A FAITHFUL COPY OF THE GEOGRAPHICAL FEATURES. THERE IS NOW NOTHING IN THE MARGINS. THE ARROW POINTING NORTH IN THE CENTER RIGHT OF THE PRIOR EDITION IS CHANGED TO A FLEUR-DE-LIS. SEE MAP # 299B5.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A BEAUTIFUL COLORED COPY OF EDITION 1, STATE 3 OF THIS MAP ON HEAVY PAPER WITH AN ACQ. # OF N027-UUG AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-256. IT HAS A GOOD BLACK AND WHITE COPY OF EDITION 2 WITH AN ACQ. # OF B015-NTL AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-527.
