REMAINING TITLE & ID : FROM PROVIDENCE, R.I. AND RETURN TO BOSTON IN TWO SHEETS. THERE IS NO CARTOUCHE. THE MAP HAS A HEAVY BORDER LINE WITH A LIGHT NEAT LINE INSIDE. AN ARROW POINTS TO NORTH AND AN INTERSECTING LINE INDICATES EAST AND WEST (UPPER RIGHT CORNER OF THE NE SHEET). ECHELLE DE 80 MILLES (BOTTOM CENTER, HALF ON EACH SHEET). MAP IS ORIENTED WITH NORTHWEST AT THE TOP. THERE IS NOTHING ON THE REVERSE SIDE. LONGITUDE AND LATITUDE (NOT SHOWN).

DESCRIPTION : THIS UNTITLED MAP COVERS FROM BOSTON HARBOR TO PAMTICO RIVER IN TWO SHEETS. IT IS ORIENTED WITH NORTHWEST AT THE TOP. THE NORTHEASTERN SHEET EXTENDS AS FAR SOUTH AS CHESTER, PA. THE SOUTHWESTERN SHEET INCLUDES THE ENTIRE CHESAPEAKE BAY. THE MAP SHOWS THE ROUTE OF MARCH OF COMTE DE ROCHAMBEAU'S ARMY FROM PROVIDENCE, R.I. TO YORKTOWN, VA. AND THE RETURN MARCH FOLLOWING THE VICTORY AT YORKTOWN OVER THE BRITISH FORCES UNDER CORNWALLIS. THE MARCHES OCCURRED FROM JUNE 10th TO SEPTEMBER 30th, 1781. A TOTAL OF 54 CAMPS ARE SHOWN AND NUMBERED BETWEEN WILLIAMSBURG AND BOSTON. FORTY CAMPSITES OF THESE WERE ON THE MARCH SOUTH. FOURTEEN MARCHES FROM NEAR ANNAPOLIS TO THE WILLIAMSBURG AREA ARE ALSO SHOWN.

THE MAP APPEARED IN THE SECOND EDITION OF FRANCOIS SOULES HISTOIRE DES TROUBLES DE l'AMERIQUE ANGLAISE, 8o, 4 VOLS, PARIS, BUISSON, 1787. THIS WAS ONE OF THE BEST CONTEMPORARY ACCOUNTS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION AND EMPHASIZED FRENCH AND SPANISH PARTICIPATION. THE FIRST EDITION, WHICH ROCHAMBEAU AIDED IN THE PREPARATION, WAS PUBLISHED IN 2 VOLS. IN LONDON BY SPILSBURY IN 1785 AND LACKED THE MAPS. THOMAS JEFFERSON HELPED IN THE ENLARGEMENT OF THE SECOND EDITION TO 4 VOLS. THE SOUTHWESTERN SHEET, CONTAINING THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AREA IS AT THE END OF VOL. 2. THE NORTHEASTERN SHEET IS AT THE END OF VOL. 3.

THE PRINTED MAP IS TAKEN FROM A MANUSCRIPT MAP IN THE ROCHAMBEAU COLLECTION AT THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS (LC # G3701.S3 1782 .C6 ROCH. 65). SEE MAP # 282A5. ON THE MANUSCRIPT, THE MARCH ROUTE ARE SHOWN IN COLOR. THE TITLE OF THE MS. "COTE DE YORK-TOWN A BOSTON: MARCHES DE L'ARMEE. 1782" IS FROM A MANUSCRIPT LABEL ON VERSO. ANOTHER VERSION OF THE MAP, ACCORDING TO SELLERS AND VAN EE HAS THE MORE COMPLETE TITLE "CARTE GENERALE DES CAMPS ET MARCHES DES TROUPES FRANCAISES SOUS LES ORDRES DU LIEUTENANT GENERAL COMTE DE ROCHAMBEAU, DE RHODE ISLAND A YORK EN VIRGINIE, ET DES CAMPS OCCUPES AU RETOUR DE L'ARMEE FRANCAISE DE YORK A BOSTON: DU 9 JUIN 1781, AU LER. DECEMBRE 1782."

DATA IS FROM VERNER, NEBENZAHL, SELLERS & VAN EE AND PERSONAL OBSERVATION OF THE HFC COPY OF THE PRINTED MAP.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THIS HAS NOT YET BEEN RESEARCHED. SELLERS & VAN EE SUGGEST SEEING ICE AND BROWN, AMERICAN CAMPAIGNS OF ROCHAMBEAU'S ARMY, 1972, V. 2, PP. 96-197 FOR DATA ON OTHER VERSIONS OF THE MS. MAP.

VERNER NOTES THAT THIS PRINTED MAP IS TAKEN FROM MSS. 65 OF THE ROCHAMBEAU COLLECTION IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS. THAT MAP IS ENTITLED "COTE DE YORK-TOWN A BOSTON. MARCHES DE L'ARMEE, 1781". THE MS. MAP IS 43 X 164 (MEASURED AS IF BOTH SHEETS JOINED) AND IS IN COLOR.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : HFC HAS A GOOD SET OF THE SOULES HISTORY IN 4 VOLUMES WITH THE FOLDED MAPS IN BLACK AND WHITE. THE SHEETS WERE REMOVED FROM VOLS. 2 AND 3 OF THE SOULES HISTORY AND PLACED IN MYLAR ENVELOPES FOR CONSERVATION PURPOSES. BOTH SHEETS HAVE MINOR TEARS WHERE THEY WERE ATTACHED TO THE HISTORY. HFC ALSO HAS A REPRODUCTION OF MSS. 65 FROM THE ROCHAMBEAU COLLECTION IN THE LC FROM WHICH THIS PRINTED MAP WAS TAKEN. THE NORTHWESTERN SHEET OF THE PRINTED MAP HAS A WATERMARK SHOWING A BUNCH OF GRAPES AND SOME UNIDENTIFIABLE LINES ABOVE THEM.
