VERNER SUGGESTS THAT THIS PRINTED MAP WAS TAKEN FROM A FRENCH MANUSCRIPT MAP OF THE SAME NAME IN THE ROCHAMBEAU COLLECTION (MSS. 59) IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS. THE PRINTED MAP APPEARED AT THE END OF THE FOURTH VOLUME OF THE SECOND EDITION OF FRANCOIS SOULES HISTOIRE DES TROUBLES DE L'AMERIQUE ANGLAISE, 8o, 4 VOLS., PARIS: BUISSON, 1787. THIS WAS ONE OF THE BEST CONTEMPORARY ACCOUNTS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION AND EMPHASIZED FRENCH AND SPANISH PARTICIPATION. THE FIRST EDITION, WHICH ROCHAMBEAU HELPED PREPARE, WAS PUBLISHED IN TWO VOLUMES IN LONDON BY SPILSBURY IN 1785 AND LACKED THE MAPS. THOMAS JEFFERSON HELPED IN THE ENLARGEMENT OF THE SECOND EDITION TO 4 VOLUMES. THE MAP SHOWS NO NAVAL POSITIONS.

IN THIS SAME HISTORY IS A TWO SHEET MAP SHOWING THE ROUTE OF ROCHAM- BEAU'S ARMY FROM PROVIDENCE TO YORKTOWN AND RETURN TO BOSTON AND THEIR ENCAMPMENTS (SEE MAP # 287S4).

PHILLIPS MAPS NOTES A MAP BY THIS NAME REPRODUCED IN THE MAGAZINE OF AMERICAN HISTORY, VOL. 7, JOHN AUSTIN STEVENS, ED., NEW YORK: A.S. BARNES, 1881, 408.

EDITION & STATE INFO : VERNER NOTES THAT THIS PRINTED MAP IS PROBABLY TAKEN FROM A MANUSCRIPT MAP OF THE SAME TITLE, WITH THE ADDED WORDS "SIEGE d'YORK, 1781" AT THE END OF THE TITLE. THE MANUSCRIPT IS MSS. 59 OF THE ROCHAMBEAU COLLECTION IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS. IT IS 45 X 64 cm. AND IS IN COLOR. SEE MAP # 281Q5 FOR THE MS. MAP. NO OTHER STATE OF THE PRINTED MAP IS KNOWN TO THE WRITER.
