LE MARQUIS DE CHASTELLUX DANS L'AMERIQUE SEPTENTRIONALE DAN LES ANNESS 1780, 1781 & 1782, WHICH WAS PUBLISHED IN TWO VOLUMES IN PARIS. THIS MAP WAS THE FRONTISPIECE OF VOLUME 2. THE MAP COVERS FROM THE ATLANTIC OCEAN EAST OF CAPE MAY TO THE ALLEGHANY MOUNTAINS AND FROM PHILADELPHIA TO NORTH CAROLINA. IT SHOWS IN LINE FORM THE ROUTE TAKEN THROUGH VIRGINIA BY THE MARQUIS. NO DETAILS AND RELATIVELY FEW NAMES ARE GIVEN IN THE MARYLAND AREA. NO DATA ON THE CHESAPEAKE IS INCLUDED, ALTHOUGH THE AREA IS COVERED IN THE MAP. SABIN QUOTES A TRANSLATOR, J. KENT, REGARDING THE ACCOUNT OF THE TRAVELS AS FOLLOWS: "THIS PERFORMANCE OF THE MARQUIS DE CHASTELLUX IS A HETEROGENEOUS AND MULTIFARIOUS ACCOUNT OF EVERYTHING THAT CAUGHT THE LIVELY TRAVELLER'S EAGER EYE AND MINUTE ATTENTION; AND AS NOTHING ESCAPED HIS ACTIVE INVESTIGATION, HIS WORK ABOUNDS NOT ONLY WITH OBSERVATIONS WHICH ARE OF IMPORTANCE, BUT WITH DETAILS OF EVEN THE MOST TRIFLING INCIDENTS THAT BAD ROADS, INCONVENIENT INNS, AND DISTRACTED TIMES USUALLY AFFORD."

DATA ON THE MAP IS FROM OBSERVATION OF THE L.C. PHOTOCOPY FROM A NEGATIVE LOANED BY YALE UNIVERSITY, THE NOTES OF COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE 1787 EDITION OF THE MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
