THE PLAN IS DONE ON A SCALE OF 1:5850. THE MAP WAS FIRST ISSUED BY FADEN AS A SEPARATE ON OCTOBER 7, 1785. IT WAS LATER INCLUDED IN FADEN'S ATLAS OF BATTLES OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION, LONDON: 1793. PHILLIPS SAYS THIS ATLAS WAS A COLLECTION OF MAPS VARYING IN NUMBER FROM 17 TO 22, PUBLISHED AT VARIOUS TIMES WITH THE TITLE. IT WAS LATER REPUBLISHED c1845 IN NEW YORK BY BARTLETT & WELFORD WITH 36 MAPS, OF WHICH THIS IS MAP # 15 IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COPY, ACCORDING TO PHILLIPS.

GUTHORN, IN HIS ESSAY JOHN HILLS, ASSISTANT ENGINEER, INDICATES THAT JOHN HILLS MAY HAVE DRAFTED THIS MAP FROM MAPS AND DATA SUPPLIED BY OTHERS OR FROM PERSONAL OBSERVATION. CONSEQUENTLY, ATTRIBUTION OF THE WORK TO HILLS IS SOMEWHAT IN QUESTION.

VERNER STATES THAT A PEN & INK MANUSCRIPT PLAN IN WATERCOLOR SOMEWHAT SIMILAR TO THIS PRINTED ONE, BUT WITH A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT TITLE IS IN THE FADEN COLLECTION IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS (G3884.Y6S3.P51 FADEN 91). GENERAL EARL CORNWALLIS WITH THE ATTACKS OF THE COMBINED ARMY OF FRENCH AND REBELS UNDER THE COMMAND OF THE GENERAL COUNT DE ROCHAMBAUD AND WASHINGTON, WHICH CAPITULATED OCTOBER 1781.

DATA IS FROM VERNER, GUTHORN, PHILLIPS MAPS AND ATLASES, AND SELLERS & VAN EE.

EDITION & STATE INFO : NO RESEARCH HAS YET BEEN DONE TO DETERMINE WHETHER THERE ARE ANY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE ISSUES OF 1785, 1793 AND 1845. THE DATA GIVEN HEREIN IS FROM THE PHOTOCOPY OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COPY OF THE 1845 ISSUE.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A PHOTOCOPY OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COPY OF THIS MAP FROM FADEN'S ATLAS OF BATTLES OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION, NEW YORK, 1845, WHICH CARRIES A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-346(REPRO).
