DESCRIPTION : THIS MANUSCRIPT MAP, OWNED BY THE CLEMENTS LIBRARY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN, IS A COPY IN COLOR ON VELLUM OF A MAP DATED 1778 BY JOHN CHURCHMAN, ENTITLED "...MAP OF THE PENINSULA BETWEEN DELAWARE & CHESOPEAK BAYS..." (SEE MAP # 278C5). ALL OF THE NAMES AND DATA ARE SIMILAR ON THE TWO MAPS, WITH ONE NOTABLE EXCEPTION. THE SKINNER COPY HAS MOVED CAPE HENLOPEN, WHOSE DISPUTED LOCATION WAS A FACTOR IN THE DRAWING OF THE MASON-DIXON BOUNDARY, TO ITS CORRECT LOCATION AT THE MOUTH OF DELAWARE BAY, RATHER THAN AT FENWICK'S ISLAND.

IT IS NOT KNOWN WHY ANDREW SKINNER COPIED THIS CHURCHMAN MAP. THE SEVERAL PROPOSED ROUTES OF THE CHESAPEAKE-DELAWARE CANAL ARE SHOWN BY DOTTED LINES, SO THE MAP MAY HAVE HAD SOME CONNECTION WITH THAT DISPUTE. IT IS KNOWN THAT SKINNER WAS A SCOTTISH LAND SURVEYOR AND THAT HE AND GEORGE TAYLOR, ANOTHER SCOTTISH LAND SURVEYOR, WERE ASSOCIATED IN PUBLISHING ROAD BOOKS OF SCOTLAND, BRITAIN AND IRELAND IN 1775-8. AROUND 1780 THEY WERE EITHER RECRUITED OR VOLUNTEERED TO SERVE IN NORTH AMERICA. TAYLOR WAS COMMISSIONED AS CAPTAIN OF GUIDES AND SKINNER WAS A MEMBER OF HIS TEAM. THEIR SERVICE IN AMERICA LASTED LESS THAN A FULL YEAR. CONSEQUENTLY THE WORK OF COPYING THIS MAP MUST HAVE OCCURRED WHILE SKINNER WAS IN AMERICA.

DATA IS FROM GUTHORN, TOOLEY'S DICTIONARY, AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE REPRODUCTION OF THIS MANUSCRIPT MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THIS IS A MANUSCRIPT MAP. IT APPARENTLY IS COPIED DIRECTLY, WITH ONE NOTABLE CHANGE AS INDICATED IN THE DESCRIPTION, FROM THE JOHN CHURCHMAN MAP OF 1778. SEE MAP # 278C5.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOREPRODUCTION OF THIS COLORED MANUSCRIPT MAP AT 2/3RDS OF FULL SIZE, WHICH WAS GIVEN IT BY THE CLEMENTS LIBRARY, OWNER OF THE ORIGINAL. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF CL?-GIFT(REPRO) AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-607(REPRO).
