MAP #: 280H5
CARTOGRAPHER : HINTON, JOHN [PUBLISHER]
DATE: 1780
SHORT TITLE : A NEW MAP OF THE PROVINCE OF MARYLAND IN NORTH AMERICA.
REMAINING TITLE & ID : (BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER, IN A CARTOUCHE OUTLINED IN PART BY A TREE AND OTHER VEGETATION). THERE IS NOTHING IN THE MARGINS. NO DISTANCE SCALE IS GIVEN. LONGITUDE WEST FROM LONDON (TOP AND BOTTOM BORDERS). LATITUDE (RIGHT AND LEFT BORDERS).
VERY LITTLE IS KNOWN OF THIS MAP. IT APPEARS TO BE CLOSELY RELATED TO THE ROBERT DE VAUGONDY 1757 EDITION OF THE FRY AND JEFFERSON MAP OF 1753 (SEE MAPS # 257R5 AND 253F5). BOTH SHOW THE LORD FAIRFAX BOUNDARY LINE IN VIRGINIA, BOTH DEPICT THE NORTHERN BOUNDARY BETWEEN DELAWARE AND PENNSYLVANIA AS RELATIVELY FLAT INSTEAD OF THE SEMICIRCLE THAT IT ACTUALLY IS, BOTH SHOW A SIMILAR REPRESENTATION OF THE CHOPTANK RIVER, BOTH USE THE DATE 1688 AT THE BOUNDARY LINE BETWEEN MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA ON THE EASTERN SHORE AND THEY BOTH USE SIMILAR SYMBOLS TO MARK MAJOR TOWNS AND THE ALLEGHENY MOUNTAINS. SOME IMPROVEMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE, SUCH AS STRAIGHTENING THE EAST-WEST BORDER BETWEEN MARYLAND AND PENNSYLVANIA. THE HINTON MAP DOES NOT EXTEND AS FAR SOUTH OR WEST AS THE ROBERT DE VAUGONDY. ONE MAJOR DISSIMILARITY IS IN THE SOUTHERN BOUNDARY BETWEEN DELAWARE AND MARYLAND. HINTON SHOWS IT GOING WEST FROM "CAPE JAMES OR HINLOPEN", WHEREAS ROBERT DE VAUGONDY SHOWS IT GOING WEST FROM "FALSE CAPE", SOUTH OF REHOBETH. THIS SEEMS PARTICULARLY CURIOUS, SINCE THE WORK HAD BEEN COMPLETED BY CHARLES MASON AND JEREMIAH DIXON ON SETTLING THE BORDER ISSUE BETWEEN THE PUBLICATION OF THE TWO MAPS. THEIR WORK WOULD MORE NEARLY HAVE CONFIRMED THE EARLIER REPRESENTATION.
JOHN HINTON (fl. 1745, D. 1781) WAS A BOOKSELLER AND PUBLISHER IN LONDON. HE PUBLISHED THE UNIVERSAL MAGAZINE FROM 1747 TO HIS DEATH IN 1781. HE ALSO PUBLISHED THE LARGE ENGLISH ATLAS BY BOWEN AND KITCHIN FROM 1749 TO 1752.
