DESCRIPTION : THIS IS THE LAST OF THE THREE KNOWN EDITIONS OF THE FRY & JEFFERSON MAP OF 1753 AND THE BEST OF THE TWO FRENCH EDITIONS. LE ROUGE REDUCED THE FOURTH STATE OF THE ENGLISH EDITION OF THE MAP (SEE MAP # 255F6) FROM FOUR SHEETS TO TWO, WITHOUT ELIMINATING ANY OF THE CONTENT OR REDUCING THE SCALE. THIS WAS ACCOMPLISHED BY USING AN INSET ALONG THE LOWER RIGHT SIDE OF THE MAP IN THE EMPTY OCEAN AREA TO CONTAIN THE WESTERN MATERIAL. MOST OF THE NAMES ARE TRANSLATED INTO FRENCH. THIS EDITION OF THE MAP WAS PUBLISHED IN ONLY ONE STATE. IT APPEARED IN LE ROUGE, G.L., ATLAS AMERIQUAIN SEPTENTRIONAL..., PARIS: CHEZ LE ROUGE, 1778, WHICH WAS COPIED FROM JEFFERY AND FADEN'S AMERICAN ATLAS..., WHICH CONTAINED THE FRY & JEFFERSON MAP.

GEORGE LOUIS LE ROUGE WAS A PROMINENT PUBLISHER IN PARIS FROM 1741 TO 1789. IN ADDITION TO MAKING A FRENCH EDITION OF THE AMERICAN ATLAS, LE ROUGE ALSO COPIED JEFFERY & FADEN'S THE AMERICAN PILOT... IN THAT SAME YEAR. THE LE ROUGE EDITION OF THE MAP IS ON HEAVY PAPER, WATERMARKED WITH A CHAPLET SIMILAR TO HEAWOOD 236, PL. 10.

DATA IS PRIMARILY FROM VERNER'S STUDY IN IMAGO MUNDI XXI.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THE MANUSCRIPTS FROM WHICH THE MAP WAS MADE ARE NOT KNOWN TO HAVE SURVIVED. THERE ARE THREE PRINTED EDITIONS OF THIS MAP. THE ENGLISH EDITION IS IN EIGHT STATES, THE FIRST FOUR OF WHICH HAVE SIGNIFICANT GEOGRAPHICAL CHANGES AND THE REMAINDER INVOLVE BIBLIOGRAPHICAL CHANGES ONLY. THE FIRST FRENCH EDITION IS KNOWN IN FIVE STATES, AND THE SECOND IS IN ONE STATE ONLY.
