REMAINING TITLE & ID : DUBLIN SOLD BY GEO. GRIERSON AT THE TWO BIBLES IN ESSEX STREET (CARTOUCHE IN UPPER RIGHT CORNER). "A SCALE OF 15 ENGLISH LEAGUES" (LOWER LEFT CORNER, INSIDE OBLONG BOX). EIGHT POINT COMPASS ROSES (NE OF CHESAPEAKE BAY ENTRANCE AND E OF DELAWARE BAY ENTRANCE. THERE IS NOTHING IN THE MARGINS OR ON THE REVERSE SIDE. LONGITUDE (NOT SHOWN). LATITUDE (TOP AND BOTTOM BORDERS).
BOULTER GRIERSON, GEORGE'S SECOND SON, ACQUIRED POSSESSION OF THE PLATES AND PUBLISHED THE SECOND PRINTING IN 1767. HIS MOTHER, GEORGE'S SECOND WIFE, WAS THE SISTER OF THE NOTED PRINTER JAMES BLOW OF BELFAST.
THE ORIGINAL CHART FROM WHICH THIS ED. WAS COPIED FROM JOHN THORNTON'S MOST NOTABLE CONTRIBUTION TO VA-MD CARTOGRAPHY.THE VA-MD PORTION IS A CAREFUL COPY OF THE HERRMAN MAP OF 1673, ALTERED OVER THE YEARS BY NEW INFO FROM OTHER SOURCES, SUCH AS MARK TIDDEMAN AND OTHERS. THE THORNTON CHART IS ENGRAVED ON TWO PLATES: A JOINED IMPRESSION MEASURES 79.7 CM N-S BY 50 CM E-W. IT IS ORIENTED TO THE WEST. NAVIGATIONAL RATHER THAN LAND FEATURES ARE EMPHASIZED. THORNTON'S CHART WAS IN USE FOR SOME 105 YEARS BUT WAS OBSOLETED BY THE HOXTON CHART OF 1735, SOME 32 YEARS BEFORE THE PUBLICATION OF THE GRIERSON ISSUE.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THERE ARE THREE EDITIONS. THE FIRST (SEE MAP #189T5) HAS 5 STATES. THE SECOND (SEE MAP #243M3) HAS 2 STATES AND THE THIRD, THE PIRATED EDITION DESCRIBED HEREIN, HAS A SINGLE STATE IN TWO ISSUES (SEE ALSO MAP # 249G5).
ED. 1- STATE 1-(1689)- SEE MAP #189T5 FOR DETAILS OF THIS EDITION.THE IMPRINT READS: BY JOHN THORNTON AT YE PLATT IN THE MINORIES AND BY WILL: FISHER AT YE POSTORN GATE ON TOWER HILL LONDON.
- STATE 2-(1689?-1698?)- GEOGRAPHICAL CHANGES WERE MADE PRIMARILY IN THE DELAWARE BAY AREA. THIS STATE WAS PROBABLY FROM AN UNDATED EDITION OF ATLAS MARITIMUS.
- STATE 3-(1698?-1705?)- GEOGRAPHICAL CHANGES WERE MADE AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE CHESAPEAKE BAY.
- STATE 4-(1706-1728)- BOTH GEOGRAPHICAL AND BIBLIOGRAPHICAL CHANGES ARE MADE. PART OF THE PLATE IS RECUT BUT SOME SIGNS OF PLATE WEAR ARE APPARENT.
- STATE 5-(1728-1737)- THE IMPRINT IS REMOVED.CHANGES ARE BOTH GEOGRAPHICAL AND BIBLIOGRAPHICAL. SOUNDINGS ARE ADDED ALONG THE ENTIRE OCEAN COAST.
ED. 2- STATE 1-(1743-1770)- SEE MAP # 243M3 FOR DETAILS ON THIS EDITION. THE IMPRINT WAS ADDED AS FOLLOWS: SOLD BY WILLIAM MOUNT & THOS. PAGE TOWER HILL.

HFC HAS A GOOD BLACK AND WHITE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, FIFTH STATE, 1732 ISSUE WITH AN HFC ACQ. # OF MH016-HTUE. WE ALSO HAVE A GOOD BLACK AND WHITE COPY OF THE SECOND EDITION, FIRST STATE WITH AN HFC ACQ. # OF SF018-TGD AND A SIMILAR COPY OF THE SECOND EDITION, SECOND STATE DATED 1794 WITH AN HFC ACQ. # OF G020-IGD.
THIS 1767 MAP WAS DETACHED FROM A POORLY REBOUND EDITION OF THE FOURTH BOOK OF THE ENGLISH PILOT, ALONG WITH SOME OTHER MAPS RELATING TO THE CHESAPEAKE AREA. THE REMAINING MAPS WERE GIVEN TO YALE UNIVERSITY IN 1983.
