DESCRIPTION : THIS SMALL MAP COVERS THE AREA FROM PHILADELPHIA TO ALBEMARLE SOUND AND FROM EAST OF CAPE MAY TO THE "ALLAGANY MOUNTAINS". BASED ON THE SHAPE OF THE DELMARVA PENINSULA, THE MAP IS DERIVED FROM THE FRY & JEFFERSON MAP OF 1753. IT WAS INCLUDED IN THOMAS SALMON'S NEW GEOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL GRAMMAR ON PAGE 569. THE COPY OF THE MAP IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS HAS A DATE OF 1767. TOOLEY'S DICTIONARY DATES THE PUBLICATION IN WHICH IT APPEARED AS 1754. HOWEVER, BARBARA MCCORKLE, MAP LIBRARIAN OF YALE UNIVERSITY EXAMINED COPIES OF SALMON'S WORK DATED 1754, 1756, 1757, 1758, 1760, 1762, 1764, 1766, 1769, 1772 AND 1785 AND NONE HAD THE MAP. IT APPEARED ONLY IN THE SCOTTISH EDITION IN 1767. THERE WERE TWO VARIANT 1767 EDITIONS OF THE BOOK AND BOTH HAD THE MAP.

THIS MAP IS A CRUDE REENGRAVING OF A MAP ENGRAVED BY THOMAS JEFFERYS FOR INCLUSION IN TOBIAS SMOLLETT'S A COMPENDIUM OF AUTHENTIC AND ENTERTAINING VOYAGES..., LONDON, R & J DODSLEY, 1756, VOL. 3, P. 125. THE MAP IS POORLY DONE. THE BORDERS BETWEEN STATES ARE DOTTED LINES THAT APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN INSERTED FREEHAND. LONGITUDE IS GIVEN AT THE TOP AND BOTTOM FROM LONDON AND LATITUDE IS IN BOTH THE EAST AND WEST BORDER FROM 36 TO 40 DEG.

DATA IS FROM OBSERVATION AND NOTES ON THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COPY AND FROM THE 1756 COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : TWO EDITIONS ARE KNOWN TO EXIST AND THERE MAY HAVE BEEN OTHERS. ONLY A SINGLE STATE IS KNOWN FOR EACH EDITION.

ED. 1 - (1756)- "T. JEFFERYS, SCULP." IS BELOW BOTTOM NEAT LINE TO THE RIGHT. THE LETTER C IN NORTH CAROLINA IS CUT BY AN EXTENSION OF THE PAMPTICO R. FROM THE SOUTH. THE LETTERING AND DOTTED BORDERS BETWEEN STATES IS NEATER IN THIS EDITION THAN IN THE SECOND EDITION. QUEENS T. IS SHOWN ON THE EASTERN SHORE. SEE MAP # 256J4.

ED. 2 - (1767?)- THIS IS THE MAP AS DESCRIBED. H. GAVIN. SC. IS BELOW THE CARTOUCHE. THE JEFFERYS IMPRINT IS MISSING. THE LETTER C IN NORTH CAROLINA IS NOT CUT BY THE RIVER. THE DOTTED BORDERS BETWEEN THE STATES ARE SO IRREGULAR AS TO PROBABLY HAVE BEEN DRAWN FREEHAND. QUEENS T. HAS BEEN REENGRAVED AS QUEENS R.

DATA ON EDITIONS IS FROM OBSERVATION OF COPIES IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS AND IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A GOOD COPY OF EDITION 1 IN OUTLINE COLORING WITH AN ACQ. # OF PG015-U2 AND A MDHR # OF G1399-609. HFC ALSO HAS REPRODUCTIONS OF THE L.C. COPIES OF EDITIONS 1 AND 2, WITH MDHR #s OF G1399-337(REPRO) AND G1399-336(REPRO), RESPECTIVELY.
