ED DAHL OF THE CANADIAN NATIONAL ARCHIVES NOTES A MAP BY JEAN BAPTISTE NOLIN ENTITLED "CARTE DES COLONIES ANGLOISES DANS L'AMERIQUE SEPTENTRIONALE: TERMINEE PAR LA Re OHIO/ TRADUITE DE L'ANGLOIS DE LA CARTE DE H. OVERTON: ET AUGMENTEE PAR LE SR. NOLIN- - PARIS: N.J.B. DE POILLY, 1756." THIS MAP HAS FERRO AS THE PRIME MERIDIAN. THE NOLIN MAP INCLUDES AN "EXPLICATION", WHICH IS ABSENT FROM THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.
MARY PEDLEY OF THE CLEMENTS LIBRARY INDICATES THAT THE MAP IS NOT BY BELLIN, WHO WOULD HAVE USED THE DEPOT DE LA MARINE IMPRINT AND SIGNED IT HIMSELF. IN HER OPINION IT IS LIKELY TO HAVE BEEN DONE IN THE EARLY 1750s. THE CONFIGURATION OF THE GREAT LAKES IS FROM d'ANVILLE (1746), BUT THE OHIO RIVER IS PRE-1755 WHEN THE DEPOT DE LA MARINE AND BELLIN PUBLISHED A MORE DETAILED SURVEY. SHE WRITES THAT THE MAP LOOKS VERY SIMILAR IN LAYOUT (EVEN TO THE CUT-OFF OF THE WESTERN TIP OF LAKE SUPERIOR) TO ONE IN L. EULER'S ATLAS GEOGRAPHIQUE, BERLIN: 1753, DONE FOR THE PRUSSIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES. IT IS MAP 38, THE SECOND SHEET OF A FOUR-SHEET MAP OF NORTH AMERICA, TAKEN, SAYS EULER IN HIS INTRODUCTION, "FROM A FAMOUS ENGLISH MAP OF THESE REGIONS PUBLISHED A LITTLE WHILE AGO." SHE DOES NOT THINK IT IS REFERRING TO THE MITCHELL MAP, WHICH WAS PUBLISHED IN 1755, BUT IT MAY BE FROM A MAP BY J. GREEN ALSO KNOWN AS BRADDOCK MEAD. SHE WOULD DATE IT c1754-1755 SINCE THE MAP SHOWS "FORT CONTESTE", WHICH IS PERHAPS FORT NECESSITY, WHERE WASHINGTON WAS DEFEATED. SHE NOTES THAT NICOLAS JEAN BAPTISTE DE POILLY WAS AN ENGRAVER AND PRINT SELLER AND NOT KNOWN AS A GEOGRAPHER. HE PROBABLY ENGRAVED IT, COPYING FROM ANOTHER SOURCE.
DATA IS FROM CORRESPONDENCE WITH MARY PEDLEY AND ED DAHL.
