CARTOGRAPHER : BELLIN, JACQUES NICOLAS
DATE: 1757
SHORT TITLE : CARTE DE LA VIRGINIE ET DU MARYLAND,
REMAINING TITLE & ID : OU DE LA BAIE DE CHESAPEACK ET PAYS VOISINS POUR SERVIR A L'HISTOIRE GENERALE DES VOYAGES. TIREE DES MEILLEURES CARTES ANGLOISES (CARTOUCHE, BOTTOM RIGHT). "TOM. XXI." (RIGHT TOP MARGIN). SCALE IN LIEUES COMMUNES DE FRANCE (BELOW TITLE IN CARTOUCHE). NOTE UNDER THE CARTOUCHE HAS A RIGHT HAND POINTING TO IT. LONGITUDE WEST FROM PARIS (TOP AND BOTTOM BORDERS). LATITUDE (RIGHT AND LEFT BORDERS).
THE MAP COVERS THE AREA FROM PHILADELPHIA TO CAPE HENRY AND FROM THE ATLANTIC TO WESTERN MARYLAND. THE BOUNDARY LINES BETWEEN MARYLAND AND DELAWARE, PENNSYLVANIA AND VIRGINIA ARE EITHER WHOLLY OR PARTLY SHOWN BY DOTTED LINES. THE FAIRFAX GRANT LINE IS DRAWN IN. NO COUNTIES ARE INCLUDED. THE MAP SHOWS ROADS AND NAMES TOWNS AND RIVERS. VERNER STATES THAT THIS MAP IS DERIVED FROM THE FRY AND JEFFERSON MAPS OF 1754.
THIS PLATE APPEARS TO BE THE ONE, SLIGHTLY MODIFIED, THAT WAS USED FOR A MAP IN A TWO VOLUME ATLAS PORTATIF IN RAYNAL'S HISTOIRE PHILOSOPHIQUE ET POLITIQUE..., AMSTERDAM, CHEZ E. VAN HERREVELT, D.J. CHANGUION, 1773, MAP # 39. THE TITLE WAS ALTERED TO "...POUR SERVIR A L'HISTOIRE PHILOSOPHIQUE ET POLITIQUE DES ETABLISSEMENS ET DU COMMERCE DES EUROPEENS ET DU DEUX INDES." VERNER, IN HIS NOTES ON THE MAPS OF VIRGINIA, CALLS THIS A SEPARATE PLATE, BUT THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS THE SAME PLATE IMPERFECTIONS AS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.
CUMMING NOTES THAT THE MAP FROM THIS PUBLICATION PERTAINING TO CAROLINA IS ATTRIBUTED BY PROFESSOR KARPINSKI TO M. BONNE, BUT THAT IN THE "ADVERTISSEMENT" OF VOL. 1, P. XVII, THE TRANSLATOR REFERS TO "L'AUTEUR DE CES CELLES CARTES...M. BELLIN, INGENIEUR DE LA MARINE, GARDE DU DEPOT ROYAL DES PLANS & DES CARTES". HE FURTHER NOTES THIS AS JACQUES NICOLAS BELLIN (1703-1772), AUTHOR OF NUMEROUS WORKS ON GEOGRAPHY AND HYDROGRAPHY.
DATA IS FROM CUMMING, THE SOUTHEAST IN EARLY MAPS, TOOLEY ARTICLE IN MCS # 96, PHILLIPS, VIRGINIA CARTOGRAPHY, PUBLIC ARCHIVES OF CANADA PUBLICATION ENTITLED FRENCH ATLASES IN THE RARE ATLAS COLLECTION, V. 1, VERNER'S [UNPUBLISHED] NOTES ON THE MAPS OF VIRGINIA, AND FROM OBSERVATIONS OF THE EDITIONS AND STATES OF THE MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : FROM PERSONAL OBSERVATION, THERE ARE AT LEAST FIVE EDITIONS OF THIS MAP IN NUMEROUS STATES. IT IS UNCERTAIN WHETHER THE EDITION MARKED AS # 2 IS IN THE CORRECT SEQUENCE, SINCE THUS FAR WE HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO DATE IT ACCURATELY.
ED. 1 - (1757) - STATE 1 - A RIGHT HAND IS SHOWN POINTING TO THE NOTE IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER. MOST COPIES OF THIS ISSUE ARE IN BLACK AND WHITE. THIS IS SEE MAP # 257B5.
- (1757) - STATE 2 - THE TITLE IS CHANGED TO "CARTE DE LA VIRGINIE, DE LA BAYE CHESAPEACK ET PAYS VOISINS. POUR SERVIR A L'HISTOIRE GENERALE DES VOYAGES. TIREE DES MEILLEURES CARTES ANGLOISES" (CARTOUCHE, BOTTOM RIGHT). "ECHELLE LIEUES COMMUNES DE FRANCE" (BELOW TITLE IN CARTOUCHE). "TOM XIV IN 4o. NO. 8." (BOTTOM LEFT MARGIN). "TOME 14 IN 8o. PAGE 23." (RIGHT BOTTOM MARGIN). THE HAND DESCRIBED ABOVE HAS BEEN ELIMINATED, WITH FAINT TRACES REMAINING. (SEE MAP # 257B6).
- (1780) - ANOTHER ISSUE[STATE?] - THIS MAP ALSO APPEARED IN JEAN F. DE LA HARPE'S ABREGE DE L'HISTOIRE GENERALE DES VOIAGES, DE M'L'ABBE PREVOST IN VOL. 22, ATLAS VOLUME, PARIS, 1780, WHICH IS AN ABRIDGEMENT OF A.F. PREVOST DE EXILES' HISTOIRE DES VOIAGES, PUBLISHED IN PARIS FROM 1746 TO 1789. THE MAP IS A PRECISE COPY OF THE 1757 MAP, ACCORDING TO VERNER, WITH A DIFFERENT TITLE. THE SAME MARKINGS ARE IN THE BOTTOM MARGIN AS ARE NOTED IN STATE 2. WRITER HAS NOT YET SEEN THIS ISSUE [STATE?] OF THE MAP AND DOES NOT KNOW HOW, IF AT ALL, IT DIFFERS FROM STATE 2. VERNER LISTS THIS AS A SEPARATE EDITION. COPIES ARE IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS AND IN THE MARYLAND HISTORICAL SOCIETY. (SEE MAP # 280B4).
ED. 2[?] - (1757[?]-1764[?]) - STATE 1[?] - ENTITLED "CARTE DE LA VIRGINIE ET DU MARYLAND, OU DE LA BAIE DE CHESAPEACK ET PAYS VOISINS POUR SERVIR A L'HISTOIRE GENERALE DES VOYAGES. TIREE DES MEILLEURES CARTES ANGLOISES." (CARTOUCHE, BOTTOM RIGHT). "TOM. XXI." (RIGHT TOP MARGIN). NOTE UNDER CARTOUCHE HAS A RIGHT HAND POINTING TO IT. THERE IS NOTHING IN THE BOTTOM MARGIN. THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.
- (177_) - STATE 2[?] - ENTITLED "...POUR SERVIR A L'HISTOIRE PHILOSOPHIQUE & POLITIQUE DES ETABLISSEMENS ET DU COMMERCE DES EUROPEENS ET DU DEUX INDES. TIREE DES MEILLEURES CARTES ANGLOISES." (CARTOUCHE, BOTTOM RIGHT). "39." (RIGHT BOTTOM MARGIN). NOTE UNDER CARTOUCHE HAS A RIGHT HAND POINTING TO IT. THERE IS NOTHING IN THE TOP MARGIN. THE PLATE IMPERFECTIONS IN THE TOP RIGHT BORDER SUGGEST THAT IT IS A SIMILAR PLATE TO THE PRIOR STATE. THE EXACT DATE AND BOOK IN WHICH THIS APPEARED HAS NOT YET BEEN FULLY IDENTIFIED. THERE ARE NUMEROUS EDITIONS OF RAYNAL'S HISTOIRE PHILOSOPHIQUE ET POLITIQUE DES ETABLISSEMENS ET DU COMMERCE DES EUROPEENS DAN LES DEUX INDIES, PUBLISHED FROM 1770 THROUGH 1798. SINCE THIS STATE APPEARS TO PRECEED THE ONE DATED 1773 IN THIS LISTING BECAUSE OF COMPARATIVE PLATE IMPERFECTIONS, WE HAVE TENTATIVELY DATED IT 1770-1773. (SEE MAP # 27_B5).
- (1773) - STATE 3[?] - ENTITLED "....POUR SERVIR A L'HISTOIRE DES ETABLISSEMENS EUROPEENS. TIREE DES MEILLEURES CARTES ANGLOISES." A REPRODUCTION OF THIS STATE IS IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION. BARBARA MCCORKLE OF YALE STATED IN A TELEPHONE CONVERSATION THAT THIS STATE IS FOUND IN YALE'S 1773 COPY OF RAYNAL'S HISTOIRE PHILOSOPHIQUE ET POLITIQUE DES ETABLISSEMENS ET DU COMMERCE DES EUROPEENS DAN LES DEUX INDIES. VERNER NOTES A COPY IN THE ALDERMAN LIBRARY IN A STATE OF THE BOOK DATED 1774. (SEE MAP # 273B5).
ED. 3 - (1758) - ENTITLED "KARTE VON DER BAY CHESAPEACK UND DEN BENACHENBARTEN LANDEN ZUR ALLGEMEINE HISTORIE DER REISEN AUS DEN BESTEN ENGLAENDISCHEN KARTEN GEZOGEN (CARTOUCHE, BOTTOM RIGHT). "No. 11" (RIGHT TOP MARGIN). "T. XVI.C." (RIGHT BOTTOM MARGIN). THIS EDITION IS A GERMAN TRANSLATION OF THE BELLIN MAP, STATE 1, EDITION 1, FROM PREVOST'S HISTOIRE GENERALE DES VOYAGES AND IS MAP 11, ON PAGE 538 OF VOLUME 16 OF ALLGEMEINE HISTORIE DER REISEN, LEIPZIG, 1758. (SEE MAP # 258B5).
ED. 4 - (1764) - ENTITLED "CARTE DE LA VIRGINIE MARI-LAND &a, TIREE DES MEILLEURES CARTES ANGLOISES". "TOME I, NO. 35" (RIGHT TOP MARGIN). THIS MAP IS REFERENCED IN SELLERS & VAN EE, # 1437, AND PHILLIPS, ATLASES, I, # 638, III, # 3508. A COPY IS IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS. THIS MAP APPEARED AS PLATE NO. 35 IN VOL. 1 OF BELLIN'S LE PETIT ATLAS, 5 VOLS., FOL., PARIS, 1764. (SEE MAP # 264B5).
ED. 5 - (1781) - ENTITLED "CARTA DELLA VIRGINIA DELLA BAJA CHESAPEACK, e PAESI VICINI TRATTA DALLE MIGLIORI CARTE INGLESI." (CARTOUCHE, BOTTOM RIGHT). NOTHING IS IN THE MARGINS. THIS MAP WAS NO. 29 IN BELLIN'S TEATRO DELLA GUERRE MARITTIMA..., FOL., VENEZIA, V. FORMALEONI, 1781. IT WAS REISSUED IN P.U. DU BUSSION'S STORIA DELLE REVOLUZIONE DELL 'AMERICA INGLESE, VENEZIA, V. FORMALEONI, 1782. ROADS ARE SHOWN AS DOUBLE LINES, UNLIKE IN PRIOR EDITIONS, WHICH WERE SINGLE LINES. THE MERIDIAN IS NOT NOTED IN THE BOTTOM BORDER AS IN PRIOR EDITIONS. ONLY A SINGLE EDITION OF THIS MAP APPEARED IN ITALIAN. (SEE MAP # 281B6).
DATA IS FROM VARIOUS SOURCES NOTED IN THE BIBLIOGRAPHICAL SECTION AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE ITEMS IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION, BUT THE VERNER NOTES WERE PARTICULARLY HELPFUL.
