DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP COVERS THE AREA FROM NEWFOUNDLAND TO FLORIDA AND FURTHER WEST THAN THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER. THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AREA IS COVERED, BUT WITH LITTLE DETAIL AND RELATIVELY FEW NAMES. THIS STATE OF THE MAP WAS ISSUED AS A SEPARATE. LOWERY (# 424) INDICATES THAT THIS MAP IS BASED ON d'ANVILLE'S MAP OF 1746 ENTITLED "AMERIQUE SEPTENTRIONAL PUBLIEE SOUS LES AUSPICES DE MONSEIGNEUR LE DUC d'ORLEANS PREMIER PRINCE DE SANG PAR LE Sr. d'ANVILLE, MDCCXLVI" (SEE LOWERY # 381 AND 382 FOR DETAILS ON THAT MAP). VERNER'S NOTES ON THE MAPS OF VIRGINIA SAYS THAT THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN IS A PRECISE COPY OF THE FIRST STATE OF THE JEFFERYS MAP OF 1755 ENTITLED "NORTH AMERICA FROM THE FRENCH OF Mr. D'ANVILLE IMPROVED WITH THE BACK SETTLEMENTS OF VIRGINIA AND COURSE OF OHIO ILLUSTRATED WITH GEOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL REMARKS", WITH THE TITLE TRANSLATED INTO LATIN AND THE TEXUAL MATERIAL TRANSLATED INTO GERMAN.

A SECOND STATE OF THE MAP WAS ISSUED IN 1777. IT WAS PUBLISHED AS MAP # 138 IN VOLUME 1 OF ATLAS GEOGRAPHICVS MAIOR EXHIBENS TELLUREM SEU GLOBUM TERRAQUEUM IN MAPPIS GENERALIBUS & SPECIALIBUS PER IOHANNEM BAPTISTAM HOMANNVM EJUSQUE HEREDES EDITIS. PRAEMISSA INTRODUCTIONE GEOGRAPHICA MATHEMATICO-PHYSICO-HISTORICO... 2V., FOL., NORIMBERGAE, CURANTIBUS HOMANNIANIS HEREDIBUS, 1759(1781). THIS SAME STATE WAS ALSO PUBLISHED IN C.T. LOTTER'S ATLAS GEOGRAPHIQUE DE CENT ET HUIT CARTES GENERALES... IN 1778 (SEE PHILLIPS # 3517).

THE MAP SHOWS THE NAMES OF SOME TOWNS AND RIVERS AND GIVES THE LOCATIONS OF MANY INDIAN TRIBES. LONGITUDE WEST FROM FERRO IS SHOWN IN THE TOP BORDER AND WEST FROM LONDON IS IN THE BOTTOM BORDER. THE MAP IS ON MUCH TOO SMALL A SCALE TO BE OF IMPORTANCE TO A MARYLAND/CHESAPEAKE COLLECTION.

DATA IS FROM VERNER'S NOTES, PHILLIPS ATLASES, LOWERY, AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY OF THE MAP DESCRIBED WITH A DATE OF 1756 IN THE CARTOUCHE. THE PHILLIPS DESCRIPTIONS OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS ISSUES INDICATES THEIR DATES AS 1777. THUS THERE ARE AT LEAST TWO STATES. VERNER SUGGESTS THAT THERE MAY BE OTHER STATES ALSO. THE HOMANN HEIRS MAP IS DERIVED DIRECTLY FROM THE FIRST STATE OF THE JEFFERYS MAP OF 1755, WHICH WAS ISSUED IN FIVE STATES DURING THE PERIOD FROM 1755 THROUGH 1808 (SEE STEVENS AND TREE'S ESSAY IN MCS #39).

STATE 1 - (1756) - THIS IS THE MAP AS DESCRIBED HEREIN.

STATE 2 - (1777) - THE TITLE IS IDENTICAL EXCEPT THAT THE DATE HAS BEEN ALTERED TO 1777. THERE ARE THREE ADDITIONAL LINES OF TEXT ADDED IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER. THE LETTERS BRI/TAIN WERE PREVIOUSLY ON ONE LINE. IN JAMES BAY THE WORDS "OR HUDSON'S BAY" ARE ADDED. ANOTHER ISSUE OF THIS STATE, WITH THE 1777 DATE IN THE TITLE WAS INCLUDED IN LOTTER'S ATLAS GEOGRAPHIQUE DE CENT ET HUIT CARTES GENERALES ET SPECIALES PAR LES GEOGRAPHES TOBIE CONRAD LOTTER, MATTHIEU SEUTTER ET JAN-MICHEL PROBST, A AUGSBURG, ET LES HERETIERS DE HOMAN A NURNBERG, IN 1778.

DATA IS FROM STEVENS AND TREE, PHILLIPS ATLASES, VERNER'S NOTES, PHILLIPS MAPS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A BEAUTIFUL COPY OF STATE 1 IN OUTLINE COLORING ON HEAVY PAPER WITH NO WATERMARK. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF BB023-DFU AND A MDHR # OF G1399- 65.
