DESCRIPTION : THIS IS ONE OF THE LANDMARKS OF AMERICAN CARTOGRAPHY AND THE BEST KNOWN OF EVANS'S MAPS. IT WAS PROBABLY THE MOST FAMOUS MAP IN AMERICA PUBLISHED BEFORE THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. THE MAP IS IMPORTANT, NOT ONLY AS A PROTOTYPE, BUT WAS THE FIRST MAP ENGRAVED IN AMERICA TO SHOW THE OHIO COUNTRY. AS THE MOST AMBITIOUS MAP ENGRAVING UNDERTAKEN IN AMERICA UP TO THAT TIME, ITS PUBLICATION CONSTITUTED A MILESTONE IN THE HISTORY OF GRAPHIC ARTS AS PRACTICED IN THE COLONIAL PERIOD. IT WAS IMMEDIATELY REPRODUCED IN EUROPE AND REISSUED MANY TIMES OVER A PERIOD AS LATE AS 1814. GOVERNOR POWNALL IN 1776 SAID THAT THE MAP WAS SO HIGHLY REGARDED THAT IT WAS USED TO SETTLE BOUNDARY DISUTES, ETC. FOR A LONG TIME AFTER ITS PUBLICATION. SEE MAP # 255E5 FOR A MUCH MORE COMPLETE DESCRIPTION.

THIS STATE IS THE SAME AS STATE 1 EXCEPT FOR THE ADDITION OF "THE LAKES CATARAQUI" NORTH OF LAKE ONTARIO. ACCORDING TO WHEAT AND BRUN, IT WAS ADVERTISED IN THE PENNSYLVANIA GAZETTE BEGINNING MARCH 11, 1756. THIS STATE OF THE MAP WAS PUBLISHED IN SOME COPIES OF EVANS'S GEOGRAPHICAL, HISTORICAL, POLITICAL, PHILOSOPHICAL AND MECHANICAL ESSAYS, 2ND EDITION, AND WAS ALSO PUBLISHED SEPARATELY.

DATA IS FROM KLINEFELTER, STEVENS AND WHEAT & BRUN.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THREE EDITIONS IN A TOTAL OF 19 STATES ARE KNOWN AND OTHERS ARE LIKELY. SOME ARE ATTRIBUTED TO EVANS AND SOME NOT. KLINEFELTER'S STUDY IN THE AMERICAN PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY TRANSACTIONS IS THE BEST SOURCE. WHEAT AND BRUN AND GIPSON ARE GOOD ON EDITION 1. THEY SUGGEST THAT THERE MAY HAVE BEEN AN ADDITIONAL STATE PRIOR TO STATE 1, WITH THE INSET OF THE ILLINOIS COUNTRY OMITTED. KLINEFELTER AND STEVENS ARE THE BEST SOURCES ON THE OTHER EDITIONS AND STATES. SEE MAP # 255E5 FOR A COMPLETE ENUMERATION OF THE EDITIONS AND STATES OF THE MAP.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A GOOD COPY OF EDITION 1, STATE 2, ATTACHED TO THE ANALYSIS, WITH AN ACQ. # OF N015-HE3Q* AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-606(2). THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS A GOOD COPY OF EDITION 2, STATE 3, IN OUTLINE COLORING, WITH AN ACQ. # OF C015-UI2 AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-558. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS A REPRODUCTION OF EDITION 3, STATE 3, WITH A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-356(REPRO).
