MAP #: 252B5
CARTOGRAPHER : BOWEN, EMANUEL
DATE: 1752
SHORT TITLE : A NEW AND ACCURATE MAP OF VIRGINIA & MARYLAND
REMAINING TITLE & ID : LAID DOWN FROM SURVEYS AND REGULATED BY ASTRONL OBSERVAT.NS BY EMAN. BOWEN. (CARTOUCHE, BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER). SCALE OF ENGLISH MILES (BELOW CARTOUCHE). "No. 61" (LEFT BOTTOM MARGIN). "PART OF CAROLINA" (IN THE BOTTOM BORDER). 8 POINT COMPASS ROSE (TOP LEFT CORNER). LONGITUDE WEST FROM LONDON (TOP AND BOTTOM BORDERS). LATITUDE (RIGHT AND LEFT BORDERS).
ALTHOUGH A COMPARISON OF PLACE NAMES IN THE 1747 STATE SHOWS THAT THIS MAP WAS TAKEN ALMOST DIRECTLY FROM HERMAN MOLL'S MAP ENTITLED "VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND" DATED CA. 1736 (SEE MAP # 236B5), INCLUDING FOR EXAMPLE THE INCORRECT "ESSEX C." IN DELAWARE, AND THE DISPLAY OF ENGLISH PLANTATIONS AND INDIAN HOUSES AND PLANTATIONS USING EVEN THE SAME SYMBOLS, BOTH MAPS ARE ULTIMATELY DERIVED FROM THE AUGUSTINE HERRMAN MAP OF 1673 (SEE MAP # 173H5).
THE BOWEN DERIVATIVE DISTORTS THE SHAPE OF THE EAST COAST OF THE DELMARVA PENINSULA SOUTH TO CAPE HENRY BY DIVERTING IT FAR TO THE EAST. THIS DISTORTION DERIVES FROM THE HENRY POPPLE MAP OF 1733 (SEE MAPS # 233P5 AND 233P6).
BOWEN LIVED FROM CA. 1720 TO 1767. HE WAS AN ENGRAVER, PRINTSELLER AND PUBLISHER IN LONDON. BOWEN WAS APPOINTED ENGRAVER OF MAPS TO GEORGE II OF ENGLANDS AND LOUIS XV OF FRANCE, BUT DIED POOR AND NEARLY BLIND.
DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS MAPS, PHILLIPS ATLASES, E.B. MATHEWS, VERNER'S NOTES, THE HARVARD MAP CARD CATALOG, A LETTER FROM ED PAPENFUSE AND FROM PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS.
EDITION & STATE INFO : TWO STATES OF THE MAP ARE KNOWN:

STATE 2 - (1752) - THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN. IT HAS THE MAP NUMBER 61 IN THE LEFT BOTTOM MARGIN. "ESSEX C," IS CORRECTED TO "SUSSEX C." "ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY" IS CHANGED TO "ANNAPOLIS COUNTY" AND "SALEM" & THE "SALE R." ARE SHOWN IN NEW JERSEY. IT APPEARED IN BOWEN'S A COMPLETE ATLAS..., LONDON, 1752.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A POOR COPY OF STATE 1 IN OUTLINE COLORING. IT HAD BEEN BADLY MOUNTED, HAVING BEEN PASTED ON NON ACID-FREE BOARD. THIS WAS REMOVED. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS A BEAUTIFUL COPY OF STATE 2 IN OUTLINE COLORING. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF PRS018-ULN AND A MDHR # OF G1399-1.
