MAP #: 249T5
CARTOGRAPHER : TIDDEMAN, MARK
DATE: 1749
SHORT TITLE : A DRAUGHT OF VIRGINIA
REMAINING TITLE & ID : FROM THE CAPES TO YORK IN YORK RIVER AND TO KUIQUOTAN OR HAMTON IN JAMES RIVER BY MARK TIDDEMAN (CARTOUCHE, BOTTOM LEFT CORNER). "PRINTED & SOLD BY GEO. GRIERSON AT THE TWO BIBLES IN ESSEX STREET DUBLIN" (UNDER NEAT BOTTOM LINE BELOW CARTOUCHE). SCALE OF 5 LEAGUES (CENTER BOTTOM). 8 POINT COMPASS ROSES (UPPER RIGHT AND BOTTOM RIGHT). NO LONGITUDE OR LATITUDE IS SHOWN.
THIS LARGE SCALE CHART COVERS HAMPTON ROADS FROM THE CAPES IN THE EAST TO "NEW POINT COMFORT" IN THE NORTH, "JAMES CITY ISLE" IN THE WEST AND "NORFOLK" IN THE SOUTH. IT IS PRIMARILY A NAVIGATIONAL CHART, WHICH INCLUDES ONLY THE LAND NAMES AND FEATURES OF GREATEST IMPORTANCE. THE FIRST EDITION IN 1729 WAS THE FIRST DETAILED NAVIGATIONAL CHART OF ANY PART OF THE BAY TO BE PRINTED. BY THE TIME THIS SECOND EDITION WAS PUBLISHED, THE WALTER HOXTON CHART OF 1735 (SEE MAP # 235H5) HAD BEEN PUBLISHED AND WAS MORE COMPREHENSIVE. THE CHART HAS NEITHER LONGITUDE NOR LATITUDE INDICATED. DETAILED SOUNDINGS ARE PRIMARILY OF THE YORK RIVER FROM YORKTOWN AND THE JAMES RIVER FROM NEWPORT NEWS AND NORFOLK TO OUTSIDE THE MOUTH OF THE BAY.
TIDDEMAN, THE CARTOGRAPHER, IS KNOWN FOR ONLY THIS CHART AND ONE OF NY HARBOR. HE WAS MASTER OF THE TARTAR, ONE OF THE SHIPS OF THE ROYAL NAVY SENT TO PATROL AMERICAN WATERS. (SEE A NOTE AT THE MOUTH OF THE CHART THAT INDICATES, "HERE THE TARTAR LOST HER ANCHOR OCTOBR 17TH 1726"). IT WAS DURING THE PERIOD FROM SEPTEMBER, 1725 TO JUNE, 1728 THAT TIDDEMAN RECORDED IN HIS LOG THE DETAILED SOUNDINGS LATER SHOWN ON HIS CHART. TIDDEMAN WAS COMMISSIONED A LIEUTENANT ON MAY 26, 1742 AND ASSIGNED TO THE REVENGE. ON HIS RETURN TO LONDON FROM HIS STAY ON THE TARTAR, TIDDEMAN GAVE OR SOLD THE TWO CHARTS TO MOUNT AND PAGE. THEY WERE INCLUDED IN THE ENGLISH PILOT, THE FOURTH BOOK, EDITIONS FROM 1729 TO 1794. SEE MAP #229T5 FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON THE ENGLISH PILOT THE FOURTH BOOK.
DATA IS FROM VERNER'S STUDY OF THE ENGLISH PILOT THE FOURTH BOOK.
EDITION & STATE INFO : THERE ARE TWO EDITIONS KNOWN, THE FIRST WITH TWO STATES. THE SECOND EDITION WAS A PIRATED ONE.
1ST ED. - 1ST STATE - (1729-1749) - THIS STATE WAS USED IN EDITIONS OF THE ENGLISH PILOT, THE FOURTH BOOK IN 1729, 1732, 1737, 1742, 1745, 1748, AND 1749, WITH NO APPARENT CHANGE IN THE PLATE. IT WAS 1.7 CM. SMALLER IN HEIGHT THAN THE SECOND EDITION. COPIES IN 1737 AND LATER SHOW THE LINE RUNNING NORTH AND SOUTH THROUGH THE CENTER COMPASS ROSE AS TOO HEAVILY INKED. THERE IS A SMALL RAGGED TEAR AT THE BOTTOM THAT MAY INDICATE PLATE DAMAGE. THE CARTOUCHE IS A NEAT RECTANGLE EXCEPT THAT THE TOP CORNERS ARE CONCAVE. SEE MAP # 229T5.
- 2ND STATE - (1751-1794) - THE LEGEND IS CHANGED TO READ "SOLD BY W. & I. MOUNT & T. PAGE ON TOWER HILL LONDON, AND THE IMPRINT IS INCLUDED IN THE CARTOUCHE. THE ENTIRE PLATE HAS BEEN REPAIRED AND RECUT. THE PRINCIPAL CHANGE IS IN THE CARTOUCHE, WHICH HAS SMALLER LETTERING, IS RESPACED, AND IS NOW FRAMED BY A SHELL AND SCROLL. MINOR CHANGES ARE IN THE SIZE AND STYLE OF LETTERING, INDICATING A DIFFERENT ENGRAVER. "HORSE SHOE" IS CORRECTED FROM "HORSE SHOOE". THE FLEUR DE LIS ON THE COMPASS ROSE AT THE RIGHT BORDER HAS BEEN OMITTED. THIS STATE APPEARS IN EDITIONS OF THE FOURTH BOOK IN 1751, 1753, 1755, 1758, 1759, 1760, 1764, 1765, 1767, 1770, 1773, 1775, 1778, 1780, 1783, 1784, 1789, AND 1794. THE 1753 PRINTING IS ON PAPER WATERMARKED WITH A STRASBURGH BEND AND LILY AND A COUNTER MARK IV. BY 1773,THE STIPPLING IS GROWING PROGRESSIVELY LIGHTER. THE BUILDINGS THAT DESIGNATE YORKTOWN ARE ABOUT INVISIBLE. BY 1778, THE COMPASS ROSE HAS ABOUT FADED OUT. SEE MAP # 251T5.
2ND ED. - 1ST STATE - (1749,1767) - THIS IS A PIRATED EDITION BY GEORGE GRIERSON, DUBLIN PRINTER, WHO LIVED FROM 1709 TO 1753. THE CHART IS NOTABLY INFERIOR TO THE ORIGINAL, WITH THE ENGRAVING NEITHER AS FINE NOR AS ACCURATE AND IT WAS PRINTED ON A COARSE, INFERIOR PAPER STOCK. THE COPPERPLATE WAS LARGER THAN THE ORIGINAL FROM WHICH IT WAS COPIED, HENCE THE ENGRAVING STOPS 1.7 CM. SHORT OF THE TOP BORDER. THIS EDITION IS AN EXACT COPY OF THE LONDON ENGLISH PILOT CHART, LACKING ONLY A FEW MINOR DETAILS. THIS EDITION IS EXTREMELY RARE. IT CARRIES THE LEGEND "PRINTED & SOLD BY GEO. GRIERSON AT THE TWO BIBLES IN ESSEX STREET DUBLIN." A SECOND PRINTING WAS MADE FROM THIS PLATE IN 1767 BY BOULTER GRIERSON, SON OF GEORGE'S SECOND WIFE, WHO WAS ALSO A SISTER TO THE NOTED PRINTER JAMES BLOW OF BELFAST. NO CHANGES IN THE PLATE ARE NOTED. THIS IS THE EDITION OF THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.

IT DOESN'T HAVE THE WEAR MARKS NOTED BY VERNER IN THE 1737 AND LATER COPIES OF THAT EDITION AND STATE. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF R019-GEI AND A MDHR # OF G1399-29. THE COLLECTION ALSO CONTAINS A COPY OF THE 1767 PRINTING OF THE SECOND EDITION OF THE MAP IN BLACK AND WHITE WITH VERY THIN MARGINS AT THE TOP AND BOTTOM.
