DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP COVERS FROM SOUTHERN PENNSYLVANIA TO SOUTH OF CAPE HENRY AND FROM NEW JERSEY TO ABOUT 25 MILES WEST OF BALTIMORE. IT WAS ISSUED IN TWO STATES OF WHICH THIS WAS THE FIRST. THE MAP APPEARED IN BOWEN'S A COMPLETE SYSTEM OF GEOGRAPHY, VOL. II OF 2, FOLIO, LONDON, W. INNYS (ETC.) BETWEEN PAGES 646 AND 647 AS MAP "No. 95". THIS PUBLICATION PRESERVED THE USEFUL DATA FROM THE 4TH AND LAST EDITION OF THE COMPLEAT GEOGRAPHER, PUBLISHED BY HERMAN MOLL. IN 1752, A REVISED STATE WAS IN BOWEN'S A COMPLETE ATLAS OR DISTINCT VIEW OF THE KNOWN WORLD; EXHIBITED IN SIXTY EIGHT MAPS..., FOLIO, LONDON, FOR W. INNYS (ETC.), 1752.

A COMPARISON OF PLACE NAMES INDICATES THAT THE MAP WAS TAKEN ALMOST DIRECTLY FROM HERMAN MOLL'S MAP ENTITLED "VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND", DATED CA. 1736 (SEE MAP # 236M5) INCLUDING FOR EXAMPLE THE INCORRECT "ESSEX C." IN DELAWARE AND "ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY" IN MARYLAND (MOLL SPELLS IT "ANN"). BOTH MAPS ARE, HOWEVER, BASED DIRECTLY ON AUGUSTINE HERRMAN'S MAP OF 1673 (SEE MAP # 173H5).

THE BOWEN DERIVATIVE DISTORTS THE SHAPE OF THE EAST COAST OF THE DELMARVA PENINSULA SOUTH TO CAPE HENLOPEN BY DIVERTING IT FAR TO THE EAST. THIS DISTOTION DERIVES FROM THE HENRY POPPLE MAP OF 1733 (SEE MAPS # 233P5 AND 233P6).

BOWEN LIVED FROM CA. 1720 TO 1767. HE WAS AN ENGRAVER, PRINTSELLER AND PUBLISHER IN LONDON. BOWEN WAS APPOINTED ENGRAVER OF MAPS TO GEORGE II OF ENGLAND AND LOUIS XV OF FRANCE, BUT DIED POOR AND NEARLY BLIND.

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS MAPS. PHILLIPS ATLASES, VERNER'S NOTES, E.B. MATHEWS, THE HARVARD MAP CATALOG, A LETTER FROM ED PAPENFUSE AND FROM PERSONAL OBSERVATION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : TWO STATES OF THE MAP ARE KNOWN:

STATE 1 - (1747) - THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN. IT HAS A MAP NUMBER OF 95 IN THE LEFT BOTTOM MARGIN. IT SHOWS "ESSEX C." IN DELAWARE, "ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY" IN MARYLAND, AND DOES NOT SHOW "SALEM" OR THE "SALE R." IN NEW JERSEY. THIS STATE WAS IN BOWEN'S A COMPLETE SYSTEM OF GEOGRAPHY.

STATE 2 - (1752) - THIS STATE HAS THE MAP NUMBER 61 IN THE LEFT BOTTOM MARGIN. "ESSEX C." IS CORRECTED TO "SUSSEX C.", "ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY" IS CHANGED TO "ANNAPOLIS COUNTY" AND "SALEM" AND THE "SALE R." ARE SHOWN IN NEW JERSEY. IT APPEARED IN BOWEN'S A COMPLETE ATLAS...OR DISTINCT VIEW OF THE KNOWN WORLD: EXHIBITED IN SIXTY EIGHT MAPS..., LONDON, 1752.

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS MAPS, PHILLIPS ATLASES, VERNER'S NOTES, A LETTER FROM ED PAPENFUSE AND FROM PERSONAL OBSERVATION.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A POOR COPY OF STATE 1 IN OUTLINE COLORING. IT HAD BEEN BADLY MOUNTED, HAVING BEEN PASTED ON NON ACID-FREE BOARD. THIS WAS REMOVED. HOWEVER, THERE ARE TEARS AND WEAK PLACES ON THE MAP AND NON-GLARE TAPE IS OVER THE FACE OF THE MAP TO REPAIR A TEAR. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF BB023-DGD AND A MDHR # OF G1399-5. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS A BEAUTIFUL COPY OF STATE 2 IN OUTLINE COLORING. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF PRS018-ULN AND A MDHR # OF G1399-1.
