DESCRIPTION : THIS MOLL MAP, WHICH DEPICTS THE ENTIRE CHESAPEAKE BAY, IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT IS PROBABLY THE MOST WIDELY OWNED MAP OF THE TIDEWATER REGION IN THE 18TH CENTURY IN ITS VARIOUS EDITIONS AND STATES. ALTHOUGH BASED ON HERRMAN, IT IS MUCH SMALLER, DOES NOT COVER AS LARGE AN AREA, AND IS NOT AS CAREFULLY DRAWN. NONETHELESS, IT IS THE VEHICLE THROUGH WHICH MANY PEOPLE OF THE TIME LEARNED THE GEOGRAPHY OF THE AREA. THE MAP SHOWS THE LOCATION OF ENGLISH PLANTATIONS AND OF INDIAN PLANTATIONS AND HOUSES. THERE ARE NO SOUNDINGS GIVEN, ALTHOUGH SHOALS ARE SHOWN BY STIPLING. THE MAP IS INCLUDED IN NUMEROUS GEOGRAPHIES AND IS THE BASIS FOR AT LEAST TWO DERIVATIVES, PUBLISHED BY BOWEN IN 1747 AND 1752.

THIS MAP FIRST APPEARED ON PAGE 209 OF VOLUME 1 OF OLDMIXON'S THE BRITISH EMPIRE IN AMERICA, PUBLISHED BY JOHN NICHOLSON IN 1708. THE SAME MAP, WITH NO CHANGES EXCEPT FOR BEING COLORED, ALSO APPEARED IN MOLL'S FORTY-TWO NEW MAPS OF ASIA, AFRICA, AND AMERICA..., LONDON, J. NICHOLSON, 1716, AND IN ATLAS GEOGRAPHUS. 5 V., LONDON, J. NUTT [etc], 1711-1717, IN VOLUME 5. THE STATE OF THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN IS SIMILAR TO THE 1708 FIRST STATE EXCEPT FOR THE ERASURE IN THE LEFT TOP BORDER AND THE ADDITION OF THE NUMBER "16", UNDERLINED AND IN PARENTHESES IN THE BOTTOM LEFT CORNER. IT WAS INCLUDED IN THE 1741 EDITION OF OLDMIXON'S THE BRITISH EMPIRE IN AMERICA, LONDON: J. BROTHERTON, ETAL, 1741, 2 VOLS, IN V. 1, FACING PAGE 345. SABIN NOTES THAT OLDMIXON'S NAME IS OMITTED IN THE DEDICATION TO THIS EDITION OF THE BOOK. THE COPY CONSULTED IS IN THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY. THE MAP APPEARED IN VARIOUS EDITIONS AND STATES UNTIL AT LEAST 1790.

HERMAN MOLL WAS AN ENGRAVER, GEOGRAPHER AND BOOKSELLER OF DUTCH ORIGIN. HE WENT TO ENGLAND IN 1678 AND WORKED AS AN ENGRAVER FOR MOSES PITT, GREENVILLE COLLINS, JOHN ADAIR AND SELLERS & PRICE.

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS ATLASES, TOOLEY'S DICTIONARY, SWEM, VERNER'S NOTES AND FROM PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THE EXACT SEQUENCE OF EDITIONS AND STATES IS NOT COMPLETELY CLEAR. HOWEVER, THE FOLLOWING 6 EDITIONS AND 15 STATES ARE IDENTIFIED THUS FAR:

ED. 1 - (1708) - STATE 1 - THIS STATE OF THE MAP IS SLIGHTLY SMALLER THAN THE 1729 EDITION. THE LONGITUDE IS DIFFERENT AS TO MERIDIAN AS IS THE TITLE. THE SCALE IS IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT RATHER THAN IN THE BOTTOM LEFT CORNER. "VOL. 1 PAGE 209" IS IN THE LEFT TOP BORDER. THE MAP APPEARS FIRST IN OLDMIXON'S THE BRITISH EMPIRE IN AMERICA, 1708. SEE MAP # 208M5.

- (1741) - ANOTHER STATE - THE WRITING IN THE TOP BORDER IS IMPERFECTLY ERASED IN THE NYPL COPY. "209" IS STILL LEGIBLE. A SMALL "(16)" WITH UNDERLINING IS ORIENTED WITH THE BOTTOM TO THE EAST IN THE BOTTOM LEFT BORDER. IT IS FROM THE 1741 EDITION OF OLDMIXON, VOL. 1, P. 345. THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.

ANOTHER ED. - (1729) - ENTITLED "VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND BY H. MOLL GEOGRAPHER. 1729". THE BOTTOM LEFT LONGITUDE MARK IS MISTAKENLY LABELED "75" INSTEAD OF "76". "55" (RIGHT TOP MARGIN). "A" AND "GGG" (BOTTOM MARGIN). SEE MAP # 229M5.

ANOTHER ED. - (1729) - "PENSILVANIA" IS NOW BROKEN AFTER "PENS". BOTTOM LONGITUDE MARK CORRECTED TO "76". THERE IS NOTHING IN BOTTOM MARGIN. FROM ATLAS MINOR. SEE MAP # 229M6.

- (1736) - ANOTHER STATE - "(AFTER [?] *432)" (LEFT TOP BORDER). DELETION TO LEFT ENDS IN "5", SUGGESTING IT WAS FROM SALMON'S MODERN HISTORY. PUBLISHED IN ATLAS MINOR, 1736. SEE MAP # 236M5.
