DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP IS OPPOSITE PAGE 38 IN SIR WILLIAM KEITH'S THE HISTORY OF THE BRITISH PLANTATIONS IN AMERICA, PT. I", LONDON, 1738. IT IS A CLOSE COPY OF A PORTION OF MAPS # 6 AND 10 JOINED TOGETHER FROM THE HENRY POPPLE ATLAS ENTITLED A MAP OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE IN AMERICA WITH THE FRENCH AND SPANISH SETTLEMENTS ADJACENT THERETO BY HEN. POPPLE, LONDON, S. RICHARDSON, 1733 (SEE MAP # 233P5 AND 233P6). HOWEVER, THE KEITH MAP COVERS A MUCH MORE RESTRICTED AREA THAN THE TWO POPPLE MAPS. IT GOES FROM 34 TO 41 DEG. NORTH AND FROM CAPE MAY (74 DEG. WEST) TO THE HEADWATERS OF THE JAMES RIVER (80 DEG. WEST). THE NAMES AND THEIR SPELLING ARE ALMOST IDENTICAL. THE CHARACTERISTIC EASTWARD BULGE OF SOUTHERN DELAWARE IS PRESENT IN THE MAP AND THE OUTER BARRIER ISLANDS OF VIRGINIA AND NORTH CAROLINA HAVE THE SAME CHARACTERISTIC SHAPE. MANY FORTS, TOWNS, ETC. ARE SHOWN IN SYMBOLS. SOME NOTES ARE GIVEN (e.g. F. BARNWELL BUILT 1712). ALTHOUGH THE VOLUME IN WHICH THE KEITH MAP APPEARED WAS MARKED "PART I", ONLY THIS FIRST VOLUME OF A MORE COMPREHENSIVE PROJECTED HISTORY OF THE COLONIES WAS EVER PUBLISHED. IT RELATES LARGELY TO VIRGINIA.

THE DRAUGHTSMAN WHO COPIED THIS PORTION OF POPPLE'S MAP IS UNKNOWN. HARRISON, IN HIS LANDMARKS II SAYS THAT THERE IS NO EVIDENCE THAT KEITH HIMSELF ENGRAVED IT. KEITH SERVED AS CHIEF CUSTOMS OFFICER FOR THE SOUTHERN COLONIES BEFORE BECOMING GOVERNOR OF PENNSYLVANIA FROM 1717-1726. KEITH DIED IN 1749 AT 80 YEARS OF AGE.

DATA IS FROM PERSONAL OBSERVATION FROM THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION AND FROM PHILLIPS MAPS AND CUMMING.

EDITION & STATE INFO : ONLY A SINGLE EDITION AND STATE HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED, AS DESCRIBED HEREIN.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS AN EXCELLENT COPY OF THE MAP IN KEITH'S HISTORY OF THE BRITISH PLANTATIONS IN AMERICA. THE HISTORY ITSELF HAS A LOOSE FRONT COVER. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF N017-HG2Q* AND A MDHR # OF G1399-432. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS A GOOD PHOTOCOPY OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COPY WITH A MDHR # OF G1399-146(REPRO).
