DESCRIPTION : THIS ITEM IS ONE OF FOUR SEPARATE MAPS ON A SINGLE SHEET. THREE ARE ORIENTED WITH NORTH TO THE TOP. THE MAP OF VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND IS ORIENTED WITH NORTH TO THE LEFT. THE TITLES OF THE FOUR INSET MAPS ARE AS FOLLOWS: "A NEWFOUNDLAND, OD. TERRA NOVA S. LAVRENTII BAY, DIE FISCH-BANK, ACADIA, NEBST EINEM THEIL NEW SCHOTLAND" (TOP LEFT); "B. NEW ENGELLAND NEW YORK NEW YERSEY UND PENSILVANIA" (TOP RIGHT);"C. VIRGINIA UND MARYLAND" (BOTTOM LEFT); "D. CAROLINA NEBST EINEM THEIL VON FLORIDA." (BOTTOM RIGHT).

THESE FOUR MAPS ARE TAKEN DIRECTLY FROM HERMAN MOLL. THE ORIGINALS OF HIS MAPS ARE FOUND IN MOLL'S ATLAS MINOR, LONDON: THOMAS & JOHN BOWLES, 1736. THE MAP "C. VIRGINIA UND MARYLAND" IS A REENGRAVING TAKEN FROM THE STATE OF THE MAP PRINTED IN THE 1736 EDITION OF ATLAS MINOR, WITH NUMEROUS CHANGES. THE CARTOUCHE IS 4.5 X 5.7 CM., WITH THE TITLE "C. VIRGINIA UND MARYLAND". LONGITUDE INDICATORS ARE EAST FROM FERRO. A SECOND SCALE IN ENGLISH STATUTE MILES IS INCLUDED. RELATIVE TO THE 1736 STATE OF THE MAP FROM ATLAS MINOR (SEE MAP # 236M5), THE NAMES "MAURICES R" IN NJ AND "APPANATRIX" SOUTH OF THE POTOMAC RIVER HAVE BEEN DELETED. THE SPELLING OF "GLOCESTER C" AND OTHER SPELLINGS SUGGEST THAT THIS EDITION OF THE MAP IS TAKEN FROM THE 1736 EDITION. HOWEVER, SEVERAL NAMES WERE COPIED INCORRECTLY, SUCH AS "TOBACOSTOCKS" INSTEAD OF "TOBACCOSTOCKS", "ROOCK CR" INSTEAD OF "ROCK CR", "WATHINS PT." INSTEAD OF "WATKINS PT.", "GOLDEM QUARTER", INSTEAD OF "GOLDEN QUARTER", ETC. THE 1736 MAP IS A LATER EDITION OF ONE ORIGINALLY APPEARING IN OLDMIXON'S THE BRITISH EMPIRE IN AMERICA, LONDON: JOHN NICHOLSON, 1708, V.1, PAGE 209. (SEE MAP # 208M5).

THE SHEET WITH ALL FOUR MAPS WAS FIRST PUBLISHED BY HOMANN IN HIS GROSSER ATLAS, NUREMBERG, 1737, AS MAP # 148 (SEE PHILLIPS ATLASES, I, # 586). CUMMING NOTES THAT IT WAS ALSO CONTAINED IN HOMANN'S ATLAS NOVUS, NORIMBERGE 1755[?], NO. 31; N. BELLIN'S CARTES ET PLANS DE L AMERIQUE, 1745, NO. 17 (IN AN ATLAS WITH TITLE AND DATE IN INK AND WITH MANY MS. MAPS BY BELLIN DATED 1739); HOMANNISCHER ATLAS, NURNBERG, 1747-1757, NO. 94; HOMANN HEIRS ATLAS GEOGRAPHICVS MAIOR, NORIMBERGAE, 1759-1781, I,NO. 141. (SEE PHILLIPS ATLASES, I, # 622); AND IN HOMANN HEIRS ATLAS MAPPARUM GEOGRAPHICORUM, NORIMBERGAE, 1728-1793, NO. 95.

DATA IS FROM CUMMING, THE SOUTHEAST IN EARLY MAPS, FROM PHILLIPS, ATLASES, FROM VERNER'S NOTES, AND FROM PERSONAL OBSERVATION OF THREE EDITIONS OWNED BY THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THE EXACT SEQUENCE OF EDITIONS AND STATES IS NOT COMPLETELY CLEAR. HOWEVER, THE FOLLOWING 6 EDITIONS AND 15 STATES ARE IDENTIFIED THUS FAR:

ED. 1 - (1708) - STATE 1 - IT IS SLIGHTLY SMALLER THAN THE 1729 EDITION. THE LONGITUDE IS DIFFERENT AS TO MERIDIAN AS IS THE TITLE. THE SCALE IS IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT RATHER THAN IN THE BOTTOM LEFT CORNER. "VOL. 1 PAGE 209" IS IN THE LEFT TOP BORDER. THE MAP APPEARS FIRST IN OLDMIXON'S THE BRITISH EMPIRE IN AMERICA, 1708. SEE MAP # 208M5.

- (1741) - ANOTHER STATE - THE WRITING IN THE TOP BORDER IS IMPERFECTLY ERASED IN THE NYPL COPY. "209" IS STILL LEGIBLE. A SMALL "(16)" WITH UNDERLINING IS ORIENTED WITH THE BOTTOM TO THE EAST IN THE BOTTOM LEFT BORDER. IT IS FROM THE 1741 EDITION OF OLDMIXON, VOL. 1, P. 345. SEE MAP # 241M4.

- (1781) - ANOTHER STATE - SAME AS PRIOR STATE. "52" ADDED IN TOP RIGHT BORDER. FROM BOWLES ATLAS MINOR. SEE MAP # 281M5.

ANOTHER ED. - (1741) - ENTITLED "EINE NEUE CHARTE VON VIRGINIE UND MARYLAND VON H. MOLL GEOGRAPHO.""PAG.573.P. 438" (LEFT TOP MARGIN)."BRUHL SC LIPS." (BOTTOM RIGHT BORDER). FROM THE GERMAN ED. OF OLDMIXON, DAS BRITISCHE REICH IN AMERICA, LEMGO, 1744. IT IS A CLOSE COPY OF THE 1741 STATE OF THE 1ST ED. SEE MAP # 241M5.

ANOTHER ED. - (1721) -ENTITLED "NIEUWE KAART VAN VIRGINIA EN MARILAND DOOR H. MOL." "J. KYSER SC." (BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER)."I. DEEL, BLATZ. 145." (RIGHT TOP MARGIN). FROM OLDMIXON'S DUTCH ED., HET BRITANNISCHE RYK IN AMERIKA, AMSTERDAM: RUDOLF EN GERARD WETSTEIN 1721. A 1727 DUTCH EDITION WAS PUBLISHED IN AMSTERDAM: H. BOSCH. THIS EDITION HAS NOT BEEN SEEN BY THE WRITER. SABIN INDICATES THAT IT CONTAINS THE MAPS. SEE MAP # 221M5.

ANOTHER ED. - (1729) - ENTITLED "VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND BY H. MOLL GEOGRAPHER. 1729". THE BOTTOM LEFT LONGITUDE MARK IS MISTAKENLY LABELED "75" INSTEAD OF "76". "55" (RIGHT TOP MARGIN). "A" AND "GGG" (BOTTOM MARGIN). SEE MAP # 229M5.

ANOTHER ED. - (1729) - "PENSILVANIA" IS NOW BROKEN AFTER "PENS". BOTTOM LONGITUDE MARK CORRECTED TO "76". THERE IS NOTHING IN BOTTOM MARGIN. FROM ATLAS MINOR. SEE MAP # 229M6.

- (1732) - ANOTHER STATE - "50" ADDED IN RIGHT TOP MARGIN AND "1729" IS DELETED FROM THE TITLE. MAP IS FROM ATLAS MINOR, LONDON: T. BOWLES & J. BOWLES, 1732. SEE MAP # 232M5.

- (1736) - ANOTHER STATE - "VOL. 3. P. 425" (LEFT TOP BORDER). FROM THOMAS SALMON'S MODERN HISTORY, LONDON, 1739, VOL. 3. THIS BOOK WAS PUBLISHED FROM 1725-1739, BUT THE VOLUMES RELATING TO AMERICA WEREN'T RELEASED UNTIL 1736. COPY IN YALE. SEE MAP # 236M4.

- (1736) - ANOTHER STATE - "(AFTER [?] *432)" (LEFT TOP BORDER). DELETION TO LEFT ENDS IN "5", SUGGESTING IT WAS FROM SALMON'S MODERN HISTORY. PUBLISHED IN ATLAS MINOR, 1736. SEE MAP # 236M5.

- (1736-1745?) - ANOTHER STATE - "V.3/1406" [?] (TOP LEFT MARGIN). THIS STATE MAY HAVE BEEN FROM ANOTHER EDITION OF THE ATLAS MINOR, PUBLISHED BY THE BOWLES. SEE MAP # 236M6.

- (1763) - ANOTHER STATE - ROADS ADDED ON THE WESTERN SHORE, PROBABLY FROM THE FRY AND JEFFERSON MAP. CORRECTIONS IN THE 1745 STATE ARE NOT CONTINUED. "ALEXANDRIA", "FREDERICKSBURG" AND "NEWCASTLE" ARE ADDED. "ANNAPOLIS" IS SHOWN INSTEAD OF "A. ARUNDEL." "YORK C" IS REPLACED BY "WILLIAMSBURG" AND "AQUASQUIT" BY "MARLBRO" THIS MAP WAS IN THE 1763 EDITION OF BOWLES ATLAS MINOR. SEE MAP # 263M5.

ANOTHER ED. - (1737) - BY THE HOMANN HEIRS AS 1 OF 4 MOLL MAPS ON ONE PAGE. ENTITLED "C. VIRGINIA UND MARYLAND". SCALE ADDED IN BOTTOM RIGHT. TAKEN FROM THE 1736 STATES OF MOLL WITH SOME NAMES INCORRECT ("WATHINS",NOT WATKIN'S POINT). THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.
