MAP #: 232S5
CARTOGRAPHER : SENEX, JOHN
DATE: 1732
SHORT TITLE : [UNTITLED] LORD BALTIMORE'S OWN PLAN.
REMAINING TITLE & ID : LONGITUDE (NOT SHOWN). LATITUDE (NOT SHOWN).
THIS MAP IS SIGNIFICANT BECAUSE IT PROLONGED THE DISPUTE DUE TO ITS INCORRECT REPRESENTATION OF THE DELAWARE COAST AREA, BUT WAS ULTIMATELY ACCEPTED AS THE BASIS FOR THE MASON-DIXON SURVEY.
THIS DATA IS FROM THE WAINWRIGHT PAPER.
EDITION & STATE INFO : TWO EDITIONS ARE THOUGHT TO HAVE EXISTED. THE FIRST IN 1732 BY SENEX AND THE SECOND IN 1733 BY BENJAMIN FRANKLIN.
1ST EDITION - (1732) - PROOF COPY - CONTAINS SCALE IN THE BOTTOM LEFT. MANY PLACE NAMES WERE OMITTED AND THE NEWCASTLE CIRCLE WAS COMPLETE TO THE DELAWARE RIVER. NO SOUTHERN BOUNDARY OF MARYLAND WAS SHOWN.
- (1732) - CORRECTED STATE - THE DOTTED LINE OF THE NORTHERN BOUNDARY OF MARYLAND WAS EXTENDED TO THE BORDER. THE SCALE WAS ELIMINATED ALTHOUGH TRACES SHOW THROUGH. THE SOUTHERN BOUNDARY OF MARYLAND WAS INSERTED. NUMEROUS NAMES WERE ADDED. THE CIRCLE BELOW NEWCASTLE WAS DROPPED. THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.
- (1735) - REPRINT - SEVERAL HUNDRED COPIES WERE REPRINTED. NEARLY ALL ARE ENDORSED IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER INSIDE THE BORDER WITH "THIS IS LORD BALTIMORE'S OWN PLAN ANNEXT TO THE ARTICLES OF AGREEMENT OF 10 MAY 1732". THESE REPRINTS APPEARED APPENDED TO A PAMPHLET ENTITLED TRUE COPIES, LONDON, 1735.
- (1742) - REISSUE -SIXTY COPIES WERE REISSUED BY SENEX IN NOVEMBER, 1742 FOR USE IN THE BREVIATE, A 116 PAGE PRINTED BRIEF BY HENRY WOODFALL. THE MAPS WERE FROM THE ORIGINAL COPPERPLATE. LINES ON THE MORE IMPORTANT BOUNDARIES WERE OVERDRAWN IN RED FOR EMPHASIS.
- (1760) - REISSUE - THIS MAP WAS USED ON THE MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENTS APPOINTING BOTH THE PENNSLVANIA AND MARYLAND REPRESENTATIVES TO THE MASON-DIXON COMMISSION. TWO COPIES OF THE PENNSYLVANIA DOCUMENT AND TWO OF THE MARYLAND ONE ARE KNOWN. IN ADDITION TO THE COPY OF THE PENNSYLVANIA ONE IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION, THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND HAS THE SECOND. THE MARYLAND ARCHIVES HAS ONE COPY OF THE MARYLAND DOCUMENT. NO PLATE CHANGES ARE NOTED. THE DOCUMENTS ARE ON VELLUM. (SEE MAP # 260S5).
- (1766) - REISSUE - THIS MAP WAS REISSUED AND INCLUDED ALONG WITH A LARGE 5 PAGE FOLIO DOCUMENT OF TEXT, WHICH SHOWS THREE MAP SURVEYS AND A DOCKET TITLE PENNSLVANIA. BETWEEN TIMOTHY PEACEABLE (UPON THE DEMISE OF JOHN FOTHERGILL...)[BEING THE LONDON COMPANY] APPELLANT. AND CHRISTIAN STOVER, RESPONDENT. THE RESPONDENT'S CASE. JULY, 1766. THIS ISSUE IS PRINTED ON PAPER WITH A DUCK WATERMARK. TRACES OF THE SCALE REMOVED IN THE BOTTOM LEFT ARE STILL VISIBLE, SO THIS IS OBVIOUSLY FROM THE SAME PLATE AS THE 1732 EDITION. SEE MAP # 266S5.
2ND ED. - 1ST ISSUE - (1733) - 500 COPIES OF THIS ISSUE WERE PRINTED IN 1733. THE MAP WAS COPIED FROM THE THOMAS PENN COPY OF THE ARTICLES OF AGREEMENT AND REPRODUCED AS A WOODCUT FROM THE COPPERPLATE IMPRESSION. THE UNION LIBRARY CATALOG, WASHINGTON, LISTS 11 LIBRARIES AS HOLDERS OF THIS IMPRINT. SEVERAL OTHERS ARE KNOWN TO EXIST. SEE MAP # 233S5.
- 2ND ISSUE - (1736/7) - ALL THAT IS KNOWN OF THIS EDITION IS THAT IT WAS ADVERTISED IN THE PENNSYLVANIA GAZETTE FROM JAN. 27-FEB, 3,1736/7 BY BENJAMIN FRANKLIN. FROM THE TITLE IN THE ADVERTISEMENT IT APPEARS THAT THIS IS A 2ND ISSUE OF THE 1733 PRINTING OF THE AGREEMENT. IF SO, THE SAME WOODCUT MAP WAS PROBABLY USED. HOWEVER, THERE ARE NO KNOWN COPIES.
DATA IS PRIMARILY FROM WAINWRIGHT AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE FOUR STATES OF THIS MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
