PIETER VAN DER AA WAS BORN IN LEIDEN IN 1659, BECAME APPRENTICED TO THE BOOKSELLERS TRADE AT AGE 9 AND DIED IN 1733. MANY OF HIS ATLASES WERE MADE TO ORDER FROM OUTDATED PLATES ACQUIRED FROM MANY OF THE OLDER WELL-KNOWN CARTOGRAPHERS. HIS WORK LACKS ORIGINALITY AND OFTEN IS BADLY DEFORMED AS A RESULT OF INADEQUATE MAP PROJECTION. CARTOGRAPHICALLY, AA'S MAPS ARE OF LITTLE INTEREST.
DATA IS FROM KOEMAN, ATLANTES NEERLANDICI, VERNER, MCS #45 AND HIS UNPUBLISHED NOTES ON THE MAPS OF VIRGINIA, FROM PHILLIPS, ATLASES, AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE THREE STATES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : THERE IS ONE EDITION, WHICH WAS ISSUED IN THREE STATES. THE FIRST IS BY MONTANUS AND OGILBY FROM 1671-1673, THE SECOND IS BY AA IN 1729 AND THE THIRD IS BY COVENS AND MORTIER IN 1761.
1ST STATE - (1671-1673) - THREE IMPRESSIONS ARE KNOWN, WITH NO PLATE CHANGES. THE WATERMARK ON THE MONTANUS 1671 (IMPRESSION 1) AND 1673 (IMPRESSION 3) PRINTINGS IS A JESTER. THE MARK ON THE OGILBY 1671 (IMPRESSION 2) PRINTING IS A COCKATRICE. NOT ALL PRINTINGS CARRY THESE MARKS. THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION'S COPY HAS NO WATERMARK. COPIES OF ALL THREE IMPRESSIONS ARE IN THE NYPL. IMPRESSION 1 IS ALSO IN THE NEWBERRY AND # 2 IS IN THE JCB AND HARVARD. SEE MAP # 171M5.
2ND STATE - (1729) - ALL OF THE ORIGINAL CARTOUCHES, SCALE TITLE, AND NOTARUM ARE REPLACED BY A SINGLE CARTOUCHE. A NEW SCALE OF GERMAN AND FRENCH LEAGUES IS PROVIDED. LONGITUDE FIGURES ARE ADDED. THREE NEW NAMES IN EASTERN MARYLAND AND SOME OTHER NAMES HAVE BEEN ADDED. THE TITLE IN THE CARTOUCHE IS AS SHOWN IN THE TITLE DATA. THIS MAP APPEARED IN LA GALERIE AGREABLE DU MONDE..., A'LEIDE, PIERRE VANDER AA, 1729, VOL 64. THESE MAPS ARE ON UNWATERMARKED PAPER. COPIES ARE IN THE L.C., NEWBERRY, YALE, HARVARD AND THE NYPL. THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.
